We have 2 h/d's on our server. One is strictly for back up. Yes, we have pretty good uptime, at least 95%-99%.

1. To host one domain on two different servers can NOT eliminate downtime; actually even CANNOT decrease downtime significantly. this is mainly due to DNS cache. Most ISPs update dns info every 2 hours+ (some every 12 hours, some every 24 hours, a few every week!!), it means, before they update dns info, visitors to your site are still resolved to the ip in their record NOT the new ip as you expected.

2. if your provider can guarantee 99.98% uptime, you should not be able to feel downtime; it is definitely unnecessary to have a mirror site.

The last time one of my sites was down I emailed them. They said they were upgrading the server.

I know I don't pay for a dedicated server (I pay $22.95pm) but why don't they have a back up server host while they are fixing the main server?

Does anyone know of a host that does this?

I agree on the RAID issue but would disagree on the down time for Windows servers. The Windows boxes we run have not suffered downtime for more than 6 months.... and that downtime was for less than 5 mins and was scheduled...

Yes that seems to be the only way. I guess I will stick with Innerhost as they have provided us with great service for more than 5 years.

We are only down when they are performing standard maintenance and upgrades which is always done during low traffic time frames.

The only way you can be sure to get two shared servers for your site to pay for mirroring. Otherwise even a restored backup takes time.
