Right, think of buss topology as a water hose with little holes in it. The holes represent the nodes.

The only thing we had was star networks.

There were about 4.

The front office were off the switch, as well as the server rooms laptops and Dave vb station.

The tech room had a star off of the switch to the 6 or 7 programmers computers, were part of a star.

Some people confuse this network as a star/buss because we had hubs daisy chained. They are still a star.

That 10BT cable that you used would be used in a token ring, star and a bus network.

Hence the use of T's to terminate into each node, and then continue the star or the buss.

You have me ancy now for that Espresso.

So would you say that PBN had a star topology?
everything came off of the switch?
Or went into the switch....even the router.
That extra server that the ADHD kid had, that he said was not on out network - was that coming off the switch too?

last night I made my first straight-thru-patch-cord out of an Ethernet 10base-T Cable!
I stripped the cable seperated the wires and fitted it into an RJ45 Plug, then crimped it....and VOILA it worked! I have it here at home for a souvenir.

Come by anytime for that Espresso.........
*wake me up if I'm asleep

Start researching network topologies.

Get dns, (remember our domain discussion) down.

Understand that an IP is translated into a name with the use of a DNS server.

In a simplified web server environment you would have these items

Remember our two linux dns servers, and the router, and the 3 web servers.

Remember the two 24 port switches in our rack?

Those were serving PBNionline.com

The little box that John had running was not the mail server as he had everyone believing, it was pbnionline's webserver.

Our two webservers (NT2000, and the other case next to it) Linux webserver, had there own ip.

Those are all part of a network topology.

They are in fact the network topology.

This post is rambling but what is really going to help you is to start thinking of the different parts to the system, then study, read and try to find answer as to why things work.

If they are that far along then SPEAK UP! When I went through my mcse classes in 99 the class was way behind when I entered. I was frustrated because they were teaching at such a low level. It is purely relative to the student. The teach WILL in fact change their way of teaching, content of teaching etc based on students request. It sounds like this is a vocational class? If it is then DO speak up, ask to speak to the teacher after class and have them understand that this is way beyond what you expected. They might have been asking for a presentation this early on to see at what level the class is in order to gauge at what level they should teach.

Above ALL else (Especially you already sitting on a masters) FINISH THIS! no matter what. You will be much better for it in finding a job in what you want to do. BTW you owe me an espresso.

Raincheck

Thank you for almost singlehandedly saving Powerband. I really miss it.

This class is unreal (to me) second week we had to draw 2 complete network designs and give -in front of the class-AAAhhhh- proposal presentations! I asked "Isn't this the kind of stuff for a final project or end of semester work?" everyone just laughed. I'm really not sure I know what I am getting into.
I'm almost late now bye!

You picked up things so fast in the meetings, and discussions with those in Chicago, hey I never told you, thank you for your help with the Investors.

OK Sam...I have a HP Pavilion 1.4ghz P4
Pacbell gave me a 4060 USB modem Ummm, Enternet 300.
AND the reason why I accepted the ME (laying down) is because HP, in their infinite wisdom, told me I have no warranty if I change the OS. I have decided, though, that I probably won't need a warranty if I just lose ME
thank you Sam for helping me. Talk to you soon....
OH! I have my networking class tonight ~ due in part to you!

Thanks tmay.... I really DO need the help, this "techy" stuff is really foriegn to me. Trial & error almost always ends in disaster for me. maye with a new OS the problem will just fix itself?
BTW, I was able to just not have anything start up except windows (not even my internet connection) and my system resources were still 81% Whats up with that???

Lemme know when you have time to help me recreate my machine Sam.

I'm not upset with anybody. If I sounded that way, I apologize. I was ready to roll my sleeves up and repair this lady's machine when the focus moved away from the initial problem of the post, that's all. When I realized that repairing her already existant OS was out of the equation, I backed off. The decision is hers and I think she'll better off with 2000 anyway, but that's not what she was posting about first.

I agree about the RAM. My only point was adding RAM does not fix her initial problem, it may make it seem more tolerable, but it doesn't fix it. That's all, I'm not updet with anybody here!

lol mairving

The first time I tried to install ME's offically released version it hosed, then after about 30 reloads because of corrupted this, hosed this, I warned everyone against it. People are running it, why? because it is preloaded on the system.

A computer is only as good as it's weakest link, and ME is definitely a weak link.

Deb, start backing up your files to a folder on your desktop.

Organize it, that will be the only thing that gets saved in the wipe and reload (of 2k)

What HP do you have, also what version of ADSL modem did pb give you. Enternet 3000 may have support under 2k.

I will start pulling drivers for you and place them onto a cd when you let me know.
