tables tips

carterjackson.com/index/celtic.html

On that page is a compilation of a pile of different persons' experiences with tables in a specific format, but some pieces relate to any table issues.

Netscape 4.x (which you must remember is 5 years old or so, and was superior at the time of the original engine) tends to cascade the background value in nested tables. There are a number of ways to get around it -- don't use nested tables, use a small background.gif in the nested table of the bgcolor you want, use CSS to set the backgrounds and all colours so it appears colourless in Netscape 4.x without interfering with the ability to view the site.

Read through the tips on that page, of course. Some of the issues also arose with the initial release of Netscape6. Further to that, the doctype that you use will affect how the document views in higher browsers especially, and that will also affect how the tables are displayed.

I do know that bg cells in IE work better than netscape, when speaking of that version of Netscape.

Placing a bg cell image on the entire table works I believe in netscape 4, in IE you can define a bg cell image within a cell.

I dont know if this is the right response, but I have worked with this before. Now that I think netscape sucks more than my industrial grade stealth turbo injected vacuum I don't follow it anymore.

What is screwed up in Netscape? I am using Netscape 4.78 (Windows) and the main things different are the top bar above location is gray in spots instead of blue. You could probably add a nbsp or a spacer.gif to fill this area.
