There are web fonts -- fonts designed for reading on the web -- that are both serif (Times New Roman is a serif font) and sans-serif (Arial is a sans-serif font).

Arial and TNR are staple print fonts that have been used online as default serif and sans-serif fonts respectively because of their common installation on almost all computers. They are generally assumed to be harder to read on the web, though I find Arial makes a really nice heading font because it is very clear and renders nicely.

Specifically web fonts (not families):

Sans-serif: verdana, tahoma
Semi-serif: trebuchet ms
Serif: georgia

There are others, of course, but those are the MS fonts designed for the web and as such are widely installed (but not everywhere).

Best bet with fonts is to list a series of fonts, from the odd one you prefer that you and your Uncle Joe only will have, down to the generic font type. Like so:

font-family: 'antique bold', verdana, geneva, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;

Or in a font tag,

Suzanne
