I think the blue bar adds a nice touch. Like you said the site would be bare without it. But a couple of things you might try/do.

First have the bar bleed off of the top, bottom and the left side. The white around the edges is really distracting.

Why don't you try a different shape? The bar could have a curve to it. For example dids.com. They did a great job of having the site on a grid but also having some curves. It really has a nice feel to the site.

i agree on the menu, ill change the font and the mouseovers.

any suggestions on what to do with the blue bar? the site looks bare without it, perhaps thinning it a little so it doesnt stand out so much?

and i kinda get the somethings missing feel too but im not sure what

I like the logo. Real nice design but it just feels like there's something missing, maybe on the blue to the right or something. I don't know but overall real nice design

Hmmm.... I really like the logo part at the top - very nice. The navbar is nice too except that the fonts don't coordinate between the main headings and the dropdowns. The font and style on the main headings is very effective, but the dropdowns don't match. The mouseover effects totally don't go with the rest of the design and the blue bar along the left side doesn't seem right either.

This looks to me like part of it was designed by one person (the logo area and navbar) and then those elements were added to by someone else (dropdown menus).
