True. That's way whatever guestbook mechanism you get should allow you (the site operator) the ability to edit the list. Very important if you go out to a service site to process the book instead of having it on your own server.

And check it regularly!

If you visit my site all4content.com and go to the listings of free forums - most of the sites listed there also provide guest books. Almost all have built in profanity filters and moderating abilities (you can delete and edit what people put in).

Well, if you really need to install a Guestbook then look for one that gives you the option to delete the bad ones and leave only the goods one for visitors to your site.

Hehe, it's more like window dressing your site to make it look good in the eyes of the visitor but it's your choice.

True, but people also write bad stuff if you have a forum and/or e-mail to you, so you can't avoid it if you are going to get it, and you are, eventually. I don't feel that's the reason guestbooks are necessarily bad, just that they are unprofessional and serve no particular special purpose.

Agreed- guest books can some times make your site look tacky.. If you do want one, though, there are plenty of remotely hosted and PERL/CGI guest books at cgi-resources.com

Make your own guestbook? That could get complicated and tricky... your best bet is to use a free one, and even at that, I don't recommend getting a guestbook for your site, anyway.
