They've transferred my domain OK over the weekend - I didn't realise that "Transfer" meant transfer to them, and to transfer to someone else I needed to choose "Configure".

Thanks for all the help!

I haven't actually bought any names from them, but last year a client had already done so and we decided to host it else where so we asked for them to transfer the tag to the new host and it took ages for them to agree to release the .co.uk one but the .com we are still waiting for a year later! They say they have done their bit, the registrars say they haven't and so and so on!!

I personally wouldn't go near them, far too dodgy in my eyes!

Thanks - I contacted Hypermart who are now accepting .co.uk domains, so I'm just trying to get UKReg to transfer. (Their menu lets you transfer in, but not out, it seems). I'm beginning to think I should have chosen a less intellectually demanding hobby!

Hi,

Glad I helped aid you in your decision.

I was actually using the free webspace you mentioned that NTL give you and using UKReg to forward the address. If you think my site looked OK then maybe you could go with them.

The only problem I found was that being a free service, they didn't offer some more advanced facilities such as the ability to run CGI scripts which is something I need to run my forum, so I have actually switched to another host which offers this. Unfortunately, this costs me about £25 a month so I'd imagine you're not really interested

You might want to take a look at Portland. They'll host your site for free provided you get less than 10,000 hits per month. Sounds all too good to be true (that's why I didnt choose them) but it may be worth your while investigating

I've got my domain name - via UKReg - thanks for all your advice!

Now I just need to find a free host to put it on! I don't think Hypermart etc will take co.uk yet.

Becky - I see your site is at NTL. I didn't know they did hosting apart from on the free webspace with your isp account. It's a great site - I really liked your cafe entrance, with separate entrances for IE and Netscape!

I like NTL as an isp (because it's free!) and I've had no problems since I uninstalled their "Gearbox" interface - the idea is OK, but it just doesn't work!

I wouldn't recommend them. I've heard horror stories about their support and service. They way they have their site setup makes me say "fishy" too. I'd say you look into other hosting options.

Thanks Becky!
I was only looking at their hosting to start with - i see what you mean about the banner. It looks like the site is actually UK2.net, rather than newbeetle.

I haven't seen UKreg yet - I'll heve to go off and check tham out. Thanks for the info.

UK2NET

Hi,

I'm in the UK and I've used UK2NET to register several domains. Are you thinking of hosting with them or just registering a domain?

If you just want to register I wouldn't really recommend it as they are actually quite expensive. My current domain http://www.cafehome.co.uk was registered with http://www.ukreg.com who are absolutely brilliant. It cost me just under £7 for my domain and I believe it is about £9 for a .COM I believe UK2NET charges about £12 for a .co.uk and about £30 for a.com. UK2NET also mention something about free stuff on their site but I've never actually discovered what they're on about.

One thing that really bothered me about UK2NET was the banner they force on you if you use their free web forwarding service (see example http://www.newbeetle-online.com ). UKREG do not have this eyesore. I'm afraid I have no experience of hosting with either company.

IMHO I would recommend UKREG. The domain was set up really quickly and cheap and you can move your domain to another company for free (UK2NET charges for this). If you don't host with them they will forward your URL without any horrible banners.
You can also assign up to 10 sub-domains for free e.g. if you bought http://www.bloggs.co.uk you could also have http://joe.bloggs.co.uk and http://mary.bloggs.co.uk and these different domains can all be forwarded to different URLs. A bit like CNET which also runs http://downloads.cnet.com

Hope I haven't confused you. Let me know if there is anything specific about UK2NET you're interested in and I'll try to help. I'll stop waffling now

Best wishes,

Becky
