Hello. A dedicated server is rather hard to manage (at first) unless you have experienced help within hand reach. I myself have had one since Oct. 99 and I am still learning the ropes.

My advice (if you choose to go dedicated), is to sign a managed services contract with your provider, unless you can get an experienced friend to help you out.

I would be more than happy to help you with any of this. Just contact me via ICQ or e-mail...both of which are in my profile.

Cheers.

Thanks guys.

I'm interested in something that talks about the common "terms" I've heard in association with dedicated servers. Things like COBALT, RaQF1, RaQF2, etc.

Are these hardware platforms? Software? Configuration standards? Basically a Dummies Guide to Dedicated Servers.

Hi,

Web Hosting:
You rent some alloted space on a server and are provided a certain bandwidth limit(traffic) for your site where you upload your files to that allocated space only. In a shared enviroment sometimes there is as much as 200 - 400 sites on a single server. Of course if there are too many clients on a single server then performance will suffer for that particular Host.

Dedicated Server:
A dedicated server has only one client and provides you with a larger amount of uptime, space, greater server access, the ability to use custom applications, greater security, greater bandwidth, and superior technical support

The below link will help you understand the different servers available in the market and also a list of Hosting companies providing dedicated service.

http://webserverlist.developersnetwork.com/

Hope this helps

Regards,
NSS
