    <description> &lt;p&gt;brain fart.. I&#039;m assuming your gong to do this server side with perl... because this is a perl forum, duh!&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Well, I could maybe do this with another language, but I&#039;m afraid I&#039;ve never used a DB with perl, and I don&#039;t think flat file DB would be good here.  Also, I don&#039;t know how to tell if a user is still connected in perl.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Do you want the username and icon to be visible to everyone online at that time?  If so this needs to be done server-side.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;If you only want this to be display for that specific user, you can do this client side (JavaScript).&lt;/p&gt;
