I e-mailed tripod uk to ask if they supported (or planned to support) favicons, and they say "We only support Lycos e-mail".

Am I missing the point here? I don't follow the connection between e-mail and favicons.

Thanks for the link - the info on the favicon.com site was very useful. I couldn't get the on-line generator to work, but that's probably my settings in IE5, as I'm not very experienced with the "advanced" options. I've downloaded the trial program instead.

What does it matter? Favicon works for IE 4 and 5 (as noted above) and is rumoured to work in Netscape 6 when it comes out.

As for the free sites not supporting it, that's because they want to use their own.

Additionally, it doesn't HURT anyone or anything, and IE 4 and IE 5 look for it, so you will have weird 404 messages if you don't have one.

You might as well take advantage of what works, like the favicon.ico, the title="" in the (and other) tags, et cetera, especially when they degrade well and don't hurt lower/other browsers.

I've read that not all browsers support favicons, and that free web hosts like Tripod and Geocities don't support them, so I haven't bothered - is this true?

I Have found that it only works if it has 16 colours
too

From what i have gathered

IE5.x = 256 colour Favicons
IE4.x = 16 colour Favicons

so 16 is a safe bet if 256 doesent work

Don't be afraid of this favicon thing... it's very, very simple. Basically, you just create a small (16x16 I think) icon of your choosing (or find one on the web) and upload it as favicon.ico in your root directory and it will appear (ONLY) in IE.
