What if I wanted to serve streaming video...or at the least progressive download videos in all three majors..QT, Real and WM??

I presume that would exceed the 100K eg: proposed above...

My thinking towards owner host is the idea of uploading 2GB of files for serving each month...via ftp that's out there isnt it???
Of course a T1 would probably not be sufficient either if I had 20 simultaneous viewers as "on-demand".

Well,

depending on what you host you can get away with an ISDN-line (64K/56K) and a small box (486-133, 64MB ram).

For a static site (dynamic content<10%) and not to many downloads that is no problem.

1 Million hits with 100K each spread over 24hours are absolutly no problem with this config.

Can you tell us what kind of site you want to host ?

Take a look at:

http://www.thewhir.com/articles/

You'll find a few articles about hosting yourself. Generally, you need a T1 line and a decent machine. I mean, you can try hosting off DSL or cable, but.. hmmm..

I second that suggestion. Rackspace is used by many large sites (IE: http://www.sitepoint.com) and has proven that they're worthy...

Checkout rackspace.com. They seem to be really popular when it comes to colocation and dedicated hosting. I'm considering getting a server with them pretty soon...

Well, first off, I'd suggest you just co-location with a company. It's much cheaper then getting your own T1 line or something. Then you need a server. As I said, you can co-locate with a company, which means you provide the server, and they provide the bandwidth, or you could just get a dedicate server with a company, which means they provide both the server and bandwidth. Either way, I'd recommend the following specs on a computer used to host your site(s)...

- At least 500MHz P2/P3
- At least 128MB Ram
- Any HD size you need
- Anything else, etc...

That would be good for a few good trafficed sites...
