LOL, I would say so. Don't think Chris posts here anymore.

People think it's all for free. Just let them have thier web site down for a couple of days, or have a tech issue they can't get a response to, or get thier site zapped because of some fine print in the TOS....then ask them if the $6/month is worth it.

Actually, it isn't all that rare. In the non-internet business world I've seen many large multi-million dollar profitable companies spend googles on some project then go cheap on the printing or the customer service or the packaging, etc. Then they wonder why the project isn't as successful as they thought it could be.

As a general business observation: When a company or person spends large sums and then suddenly starts getting penny-wise on the implementation details it often means they are scared that they's spent too much on something that isn't as good as they first thought it was.

but I don't quite understand?

What you're really asking for is who has the best free banners.

I know free hosts often have banners but, well, why?
People aren't really asking who has the best free banners, the don't want banners, they seem to expect a host to emerge out of thin air to host their site on, they don't know the have to pay for it, or if they do they want it free, and what they get is rubbish. So designers ought to tell their clients to get a decent host, or mabye do a package deal with their client and include hosting. I have done such deals, they even included a computer (get them for couple of hundred, woth a thou).

I'll have to admit that I always wonder about people who want a really good free host. What you're really asking for is who has the best free banners.

I always tell people to check out Hosting Matters. For $10/month you get no setup fee, 50MB disk, 3GIG transfer, 20 POP3, and a control panel. Most people spend more than $10 a month on cheeseburgers.

The point I was trying to make is that too many *normal* sites (e.g. not hyper mart, they also provide hosting) spend loads on design and seem to expect the hosting to be, well, just appear out of no where on its own for nothing. And when they find that doesn't happen they try and get it all for nothing and end up with a crap host that has their site filled with ads and is down all the time. So I think that web designers should make it very clear to their clients that decent hosting costs money, mabye not a lot of money in some cases, but still good money. And the best time to tell them about the hosting expenses is at the beggining and at the p[oint in time when they are pumping money into the design left right and centre.

Oh ok, got you. But in my experiance I've never seen a really _QUALITY_ site with an excellent design, etc. skimp out with hosting (AKA: HyperMart or something).

Very true... Usually by the time someone figures out how to design a quality site themselves, they will have made enough of a profit to cover the hosting costs.

If they have a professional design the site for them, they should certainly have enough money to cover the hosting costs.

Justin:

I am not talking about virtual vosting here, I am talking about the free stuff or the really cheap and crap accounts that are no good for their needs. If it suites you then it's fine, but all too often ppl don't put hosting into their budget.
