I've been working with free hosting companies since geocities was in its 2nd year. I currently advise several major free hosts and have watched them turn down multi-million dollar offers.

I have also watched much smaller sites sell. While I'm sure you have a lot of intent, 550 users is nothing. This whole notion people have of getting a small hosting accoutn and working their way up is almost pointless. Unless you start with some deceent power (a dedicated box and some deceent bandwidth), you will not be able to grow at all.

When people talk about doing well in the free hosting business, they mean 2-4 thousand signups a day. If you think that's only something tripod or geocities gets, think again.

What I would advise you to do is get some money together and purchase a monster service (that is if you really intend to do free hosting). Promote the service, improve your features and keep working it. When you have AT LEAST 20 or 30 thousand users, consider selling. The money will be much, much better then you could ever hope to get for 550 or 2000 users and you will actually have some real ad revenue.

On a final note, make sure you word your policy right, eventually you or someone planning to buy you out will decide to run ads as there is almost no way to support hosting without impression based banners.

No, I know that $30 is practically nothing, although I did get everything I needed for less than $30/month at http://site5.com/

Right now, I decided to sell the site though since it got large potential and pre-established user base, etc.

I think it's abit unrealistic to try and get everything for US $30 too.

I know fasthosts.co.uk could possibly do what you want for $45 but they provide suspect tech support.

They can take up to 4 days to reply to a question and have frequent outrages.

I myself use dialtoneinternet.net. They are one of the best dedicated server companies out there.

If you are really going to run a free hosting site you'll probably find that virtual hosting solutions won't suit you well at all, and to find what you're looking for for less that $30?!?!?! It seems much too cheap to me.

Your best bet would be to get your own dedicated server, which you could do from several resources including alabanza.com (who has been great, but a bit expensive), rackspace.com, dialtoneinternet.net, etc.
