VirtualAve.net is good. Yes but be aware, I heard that they delete accounts that are running UBB or any similar kind.

I use Virtualave.net before I got my domain. Surprised to hear that tidbit about UBB. Where'd you hear this?

virtualave.net?

However, if you're looking for more advanced features, I would recommend virtualave.net. A lot of space, subdomain (you get http://yourname.virtualave.net) and CGI access.

Nail, I currently deleted all the files, not the account, of a page at virtualave.net and replaced them with a new page & accompanying files. And I forgot what the procedure was.....Should I use the original site name?? In the public_html folder there is a cgi_bin folder (they put there) and all my page and image files. Any suggestions on what I need to do?? I'm not a moron, but there customer service and procedural instructions suck green donky *#&%. They are free, though, and I should have kept a better explanation of how to do things. So, my whining is just that - whining.

                                                    Steve

I would recommend http://angelfire.com or http://geocities.com , since both services are extremely user-friendly and fast. I think they are great for getting your feet wet and starting a website.
They also offer browser uploading (something I'm not a fan of, but its a nice feature), so you don't need to get an FTP program to transfer your files.

However, if you're looking for more advanced features, I would recommend virtualave.net. A lot of space, subdomain (you get http://yourname.virtualave.net) and CGI access.

Hope this helps, and good luck

First off, go to a free web host. here are some:
http://www.anglefire.com
http://www.geocities.com
http://www.crosswinds.net
http://www.xoom.com
http://www.hypermart.net

Take a peek at all these and find one you like. Go to the sign up page, and fill in the fields of the form. You will get to pick a username and password, make sure you write these down so you wont forget.

If they have browser upload, dont use it, get used to ftp. ftp is more useful. Go to http://www.tucows.com, and search for ws ftp. When you find it, download and install it. when you open it you will get a 'session properties' screen. fill in the information. if your wondering what host name/address means its usually, ftp.yourhost.com, change your host to the free host you picked.

When you get logged on, if the ftp opens to a ../web/ directory, double click on it, and upload your files there.

When you sign up with a free web host, you will usually get a free email. usually web based, but pop3 is better cause you dont ahve to open a browser and you down have to log on a million times to check it. If you do get pop 3 use outlook express or some other pop3 email program.

This should awnser all of your questions : ) Good luck

Hi agape. If your web site is for a business, I'd probably recommend Hypermart.net. I got started there what seems like a long time ago .

P.S. I started at angelfire.com. It was quite a bit ago, but maybe it will be good for you as well. Don't know how they are now or what has changed. Price is free. (They are like geocities/tripod/xoom, etc.)

Maybe one of the other ones I mentioned would be better. I am a bit out of the FWP loop.

You now need to find space to host it. Free or paid hosts are available and sometimes (depending on who/what you choose), the way you upload the pages may be different. Generally (to sum it all up), you can FTP your pages to the server, or use a web browser to upload the pages.

I can't figure out exactly where you are going to go for space, but just realize that if it says browser upload only then you won't have to worry about FTP, since they don't offer that option. Browser upload means just that, you use your web browser, nothing more is needed.

FTP can be done via window's FTP, or a FTP program (many free available on the net).

Is this what you were asking even? Sorry if I missed the point.
