Thanks for your help everyone. Removing the and from the external file seems to have worked.

Seems very strange to me. All other styles worked except the default link colour.

Try removing the tags from your external stylesheet.

You may have to place the external stylesheet in the actual directory with the page calling it, instead of just in the root directory.

You might also try ending each style declaration with a semi-colon, some browsers are picky about that.

Well when I run into problems like this I usually find a way to work around them. In your case I would make the css properties into a text file and use SSI to include them. That would probably work. I understand that you are using SSI to call the top or something, but I wonder if you can use SSI inside of a called file?

Also try to put your all on one line. This might help.
