&lt;p&gt;Just include the full path to the filename, like:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;tar -cvf /home/randall/mytar.tar mydir&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;btw. the flags you most use:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;-v     verbose, print detailled output&lt;br /&gt;
-f     follow, also adds subdirs&lt;br /&gt;
-z     zip, gzip the tar when done&lt;/p&gt;
