On a related issue, how would you go about transfering ownership of a domain to someone else? (such as if you sell a domain)

When moving a domain name make sure your admin email contact is current - otherwise you will not be able to receive InterNIC's transfer notice. If the info is not correct, simply let your new web hosting company know.

Hi,
The main problem I had with my last move was my new host when they submitted the app to internic, tried to change my organization name (which you can't do with the form that is used to move your domain host). I didn't catch it on the form that was emailed to me. I waited about 10 days and decided to call internic. Took about 5 minutes to straighten everything out.

The moral of the story is "check evrything over to make sure it is right"!

I agree with Anti that it is that simple to "move" your site - but I had a ton of problems getting my domain name transferred over to the new host. I had to do a domain name cutover (that the new host should do for you) and they have to then give that to internic so they know where to point your IP. It can take them up to a month to do this. I waited a good month and a half before everything was transferred over. It did not cause a problem as far as losing visitors - I just kept my site at the old host until I got the okay from my new host.

That's the experience that I had

Hi,

usually moving a domain is very simple. (Depending on how it was registered and who is your provider).

1. Buy some new webspace, but tell your new provider that he shouldn't move the domain-name before you give him a go. (He usually will move you for free, if he doesn't go to someone else.)
2. Inform your old provider that you're going to move.
3. Copy your files to the new server.
4. Tell your new provider to move the domain.
5. Don't do too much redesign for some days, since some of your visitors will get to the new server and some will get to the old one.
6. About 48hrs after the domain was moved all caches should be updated and you can turn off the old server.

This way you don't loose traffic.

Note: When I tried to move my domain "webhome.de" my old provider fussed up the whole thing and blocked my old domain
that's why I'm using webhome.nu
BTW: It's a good idea to have a (cheap) backup domain.

ciao

I'm always thinking about moving my domain name because I'm always looking for a new host. So how does it work? What do I have to do move my domain name? How long does it take? Does it cost? Is there usually a period of confusion where you lose traffic? Any other tips/explainations to easy my curiousity and anxieties would be appreciated.
