Lloyd,

Maybe it's Netscape's attempt to try to get ahead of Microsoft

Who knows, I agree though, it would be nice to not have to write 2 different scripts to do the same thing.

Does anyone know why Netscape have skipped version number 5 and gone to 6? This seems unproffessional to me. It just adds to the long list of complaints I have about Netscape browsers. I hope they iron out most of the DHTML issues because it has been a pain in the arse writing scripts for NN.

Guys,

I guess this is open to interpretation. It's always been my understanding that the generation of the site is based on the technology it uses, not the version of the browser that views it, even though there can be similarities between them. As ropb points out though, this model doesn't hold true.

Regards,

Hmmm, but determining the generation of a web page by the current browser versions, may cause problems. IE5 is out, but Netscape skipped number 5, and is at 6 (beta).
So would that mean that 5+6 generation webpages are the same?

That’s what I’ve always thought as well. 3rd generation v3.0+ browsers, v4.0th generation 4+ browsers, etc.

fairhousing,

A 4th generation site is generally a site that incorporates much of the latest technology (client scripting, server-side scripting, db features).

It's a pretty loose term, as a reference 1st generation was basically straight text, 2nd incorporated tables and images, basic scripting, 3rd included more advanced scripting, and server-side programming.

Makes you wonder what a 5th generation website is gonna be like?
