Matt,

You should really take a look at going for your own script. PHP is VERY easy to learn and mixing it with mySQL isn't really difficult. It took me about 4 hours to get my first script setup and working with a mySQL database. After that, it is just tinkering and learning

I suggest doing it yourself because that way, it is setup the way you want it. If you want to make modifications to the setup in the future, you already know the code and it is just a matter of making the changes (opposed to learning the code of the script you coose).

Don't get me wrong, it will take some time and some playing, but it is something that you really should learn - it is fun!

You can get a wealth of PHP knowledge at the official site: http://www.php.net

And MySQL at: http://www.mysql.com

Whatever your choice, I wish you the best.

You could use DirtSearch (php indexing script) which uses a mySQL database and can handle more than 15,000 links before you notice even the tiniest decrease in speed.

you can check it out at http://www.dirtdobber.net/ The author of the script is working on version 3 of DS which IMO will blow away Links in terms of features/speed etc... Version 3 won't be out for awhile though. You can check it out while he's developing it at the online demo: http://www.dirtdobber.net/ds31/

That's all...and the setup for this script is fairly easy, all you need is your db passwords and all that other stuff...No knowledge of php whatsoever is required...

Another Review

Load time is great!

It looks very good. I love your logo. I like your colors.

On your mouseover thing that goes over the top. Only like 2 of them change color. Home and About Us. On "About Us" only part of it changes color not the whole thing.

One more thing I don't like is over your left navigational menu. You have that thing that says "webmasterdir". I don't like that very much. I'm not sure why I just don't like it.

Hope that helped!

Do you know if iLink is good? How many links will it support? Could I also add a script to it so I can have people rate their links? Thanks!!! But how about a PHP script, which one is best and how do you install them? Like PERL scripts? Please help me, and post here! Thank you! (this kinda got off the topic!)

Yep, PHP will run on unix if the program itself is installed. Most web hosting companies support it.

Does PHP run on UNIX? I would create a CGI script, but I am not that great at PERL yet. Do you know where I could find a good PHP or CGI Script that will handle a lot of links? I will have over 5000, I think so far I will be hand coding the pages, I dunno yet though. I hope I can find some script! If someone can make me one, I can give them credit and maybe even banner/button advertising impressions. Thanks!

Overall a very nice site. I think a little tweaking with the colours would be good.

I would like to see this page with the mouseovers working. I get none on the side menu and only a couple along the top (really weird how that happens). Red doesn't look good for that one - it doesn't stand out from the dark blue enough.

Your logo looks pretty good, but I think the colours for the rest of the site should come from that. Right now they're a little off (or at least they look that way).

I would also like to see what the sub-pages will look like. You don't need to have (more or less) the same navigation menu on there twice - put the categories on the left side when you get that ready.

First off, Links is a great CGI script. I've installed it a few times for people, and they seemed to like it a lot. I've never seen it with more than 1000 links, but I've heard it can get very slow. Hand coding the pages would take a while. I would recommend creating either your own PHP or CGI script. You definantly don't need all the features in Links, and a small version could be completed rather easily...

Matt,

Great looking site! I like your color selection. The only thing I see (which has already been mentioned) is the white space at top which definitly needs something.

I wanted to comment on your link issue. I would definitly suggest automating it somehow. Links 2.0 isn't necessarily needed, but you should go with something. If PHP is available and you know it or are in the mood for learning something new, I would highly recommend going with a PHP/mySQL setup. mySQL can handle tens of thousands of records before it shows any sign of slowing down. And PHP is a great language for connecting with a mySQL database if it is ran as an Apache module because it doesn't take a whole lot to run.

Anyway, just a suggestion.
