Unless you’re planning on hosting 250 virtual accounts or some huge backend application a PIII 500 is really over doing it. I’d look for a PII/AMD 400Mhz server; it will save you a lot monthly/setup.</p> <p>If you plan on hosting some good size programs or 3rd part applications (Real Audio server etc) upgrade your RAM, 96-128MB will perform much better. However 64 will still run dynamite on a Linux system.</p> <p>I’d be more concerned with (1) will they install and upgrade software for you, such as PHP, Perl, mySQL, or can you do it? (2) What do they charge for bandwidth, I’ve seen dedicated servers that charge $125 for every 50GB or so, if you’re a small company you want a host that charges by the GB. (3) What about technical support? I’d want someone available 24/7 with relatively cheap prices per call.</p> <p>Good luck, I hope you find a host that works out for you. IMHO even a P1 200 will work as a nice webserver.
