I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure you pay the registrar. Also- I think you are missing something:

1) Individuals cannot go directly to InterNIC and register their own domain. They must go through one of their resellers (IE: NetSol, TotalNIC, etc.).

Image this: InterNIC is the back room of a store, which individuals cannot enter. People can only buy stuff they see in the front of the store. The front store is Network Solutions, TotalNIC, etc...

2) If you do want to go straight through InterNIC then you'll have to pay $10k (or whatever it is) to become a reseller.

So- at this current time the best place to use is TotalNIC because they only charge $17.50 per yeah, compared to the $35 NetSol charges.

This DOES effect you because now that there is more then one registrar, companies are competing to offer the lowest prices...

After initial registration, do you pay the registrar yearly or InterNIC?

Justin - While I'm all for saving some bucks, if all you're doing is paying someone's fee to submit your info to InterNIC instead of you submitting it (or submitting it via your hosting company) and paying InterNIC's fee, I see limited value.

Yes, I know many of you guys are webmasters and probably register dozens or even hundreds of domains a year. So yes I do see a cost savings for you. However, from my perspective as a site owner I don't see how it helps me too much. I only have one domain name at the moment and hope I don't have to xfer to another hosting company anytime soon.

Am I missing something here? (I'm not trying to argue)

Yep- that is all. There are also smaller advantages/disadvantages like easier domain tranfers etc...

It seems like your suprised that lower prices IS ALL. But isn't what we want? Lower prices?

Hi... I think that's pretty much it- lower prices. Also, though, they provide you with the systems needed to modify/change nameservers or your contact information, etc. Other than that certain companies may offer additional benefits, but for the standard that's usually it. I could be wrong on this, however, but from my understanding that's all it is

But if Internic is the keeper of the DB, once you're registered what further service does the registrar give you?

Granted, a different registrar might be willing to submit your info to Internic cheaper than Internic would charge you directly, but is that all?

Well, it increases competition, which is always a good thing for consumers. It used to be managed only by Network Solutions, which charged $70/2 years. However, now that there are other registrars you can get the same service at a lower rate.

Thanks for the explanations. However, that leads to another question:

If the DB belongs to InterNIC and all registrars send the info to them, what is the advantage of having openned up registration to other registrar companies? Is it simply that InterNIC charges X-dollars and Company ABC charges $Y for submitting the same info?

Curtis - What problems were you refering to? If the registrar just sends the info to InterNIC (I assume you still receive a confirmation email from InterNIC when it's done) once the transaction is finished it doesn't matter what happens to the registrar company.

Yes, although there are several registrars now they all use a shared database managed by ICANN/InterNIC. This is the actual database used for domain names, which the registrars can tap into on a first come, first-served basis. So, 2 people registered yourname.com at 2 different registrars at the same time, the one that would get it would be the registrar that sent the information to InterNIC first.
