So you would feel comfortable with having 500 domains on a Pentium 500 MHz, 256 RAM MB ? If let's say domains are using lots of cgis, database interface calls (mySQL), and the server is also acting as "Mail Server", "Database Server", "RealPlayer Media Server", and "DNS server" .... would you say this server would still be able to handle easily, and effectively around 100 domains ??

Please share your expertise or rough estimate . I'd really appreciate any input! Thanks a lot.

Curtis' estimate is a little low. Of course, it all depends on the sites and the servers, among other things, but a up-to-date server (PII 500, 256 MB RAM) could easily handle 500+ UNIX sites. When you start adding CGI and mySQL and all the other programs that take up CPU processes and RAM, that number begins to fall. But, I would say that the average number of sites on a UNIX server is 500 or so.

Usually about half that for an NT server because the programs take up more space and are much more resource hungry.

Unix:

This varies to what type of server it is, what kind of connections you have, and how big the sites that are on it. I would say an average is about 100 - 175.
