Well at least your comming up in price. I'm personally charged $150 per 50gig block, you may want to check around dedicated server sites to get an idea of what hosting companies are charged, then you can decide on a offering.

Perhaps, I'm missing some fine details here, as I have no experience in distributing shareware. But wouldn't it be easier to submit your programs to shareware directories like Hotfiles.com or Shareware.com. Then you could provide technical support, program description, etc. on your website, but the links to download the program would point to hotfiles.com

I agree, and from experience. Tons of hosts offer unlimited bandwidth, including my current host (CommuniTech). According to their contract:

"CommuniTech.Net may also at its discretion at any time, suspend access to any client's website without notice, due to over-consumption of bandwidth (exceeding 17,000MB/day transfer), CPU usage, or any other reason which might effect the performance of CommuniTech.Net services"

However, I've heard stories about CommuniTech suspending sites using no where near 17GB. But they are an option.

Also I saw a URL for 3D Hosting. They offer a pretty good deal.

24.95 = 30GB a month
54.95 = 60GB a month
129.98 = 100GB a month

Take a look at 3dhosting.com

I don't remember who, but I know a few large sites use them, as I've seen their button around.

Good luck!

Jury,

Since most hosts pay between $3 and $5 per GB of bandwidth, if you need 30 GB you should expect to pay between $90 and $150 per month for that amount.

There will always be exceptions, of course. I know there are many hosts who give more bandwidth than they're charging for on the assumption that most customers won't use all of their bandwidth. But once a host starts having a lot of customers using all their allotted bandwidth, the host will usually be forced to either raise prices or decrease the bandwidth allotment (or both).

As I said, you will undoubtedly find a few hosts willing to do such a deal with you, but I'd recommend you keep your site backed up on your local computer at least daily because eventually the host will shut it down because eventually they won't be able to afford to keep such a site on the server when they lose money on it.

Good luck,

None that I know of (and I was looking about 4-5 months ago). I pay more than that a month for 10 gigs but that is also because I have 750 megs of space and both NT and Unix availability.

The point is that is you have high-traffic "pure" (HTML-only) site, you can get paid for it with banners or so. Site with a file's traffic can't get me such a big money, so I can't afford dedicated server for > $400/month.

Let's forget unlimited hosters, by my limit is high enough. Is there any Unix host that can handle 30 Gb/month for < $50 ? Can anybody suggest anything ?

On the topic of unlimited bandwidth, you would be wise to avoid ANY hosts that claim to offer this. The host that comes to my mind in this issue is True Hosting. They claim to offer unlimited, but once you use more than 30 GB of traffic, they come up with some excuse and boot you off the server. True Hosting is bad, but I am sure there are many more hosts who use these same unethical business practices. Bottom line, avoid any host that claims to offer unlimited bandwidth, space, FTP accounts, or anything!

Jury,

I am sorry to have to argue this point, but you are mistaken. They may say they are unlimited and you may think so as well... but NOONE can have an unlimited account. What I can tell you is that you must not have reached it yet. Now 20 gig is pretty high and you are fortunate to get that for only $10 a month. I have paid 3x more and gotten kicked off servers for using 12 gig. But do you seriously think that if Netscrape put you on their Cool Sites link next month and you did 75 gig, you would still pay $10 a month if you weren't shut off altogether? Bandwidth is a commodity and is part of what every Webhost pays for. Right now they are losing money with you and making it up by what they get paid for others that use less than 1 gig...

So, you are now looking for others and hopefully being up front about your current needs - otherwise you might find that you will get a higher charge or a short stay at any future 'home'.

Good luck... but I believe that you will be paying more than you are now.

Jury,

Ok, it sounds like a good deal to be able to use 20GB/month for a only 10 dollars. But I do believe your host will wise up eventually and will say "stop"...If they don't....well in that case I you say must be using some other customers "quota". Your host has most likely figured out a "break even" amount of bandwidth their clients can use. And if all dont use a lot they dont have a problem. If you all started using 20GB/month they would surely gripe and raise prices.
