Mirror sites are used not primarily for total redundancy but to reduce load times. If you have a site mirrored in, lets say, both US and Europe it decreases traffic and load times if the Europeans use the European mirror while americans use the one server closest to them, namely the US mirror.

That's what the mirrors are for. But if you have control of the network you can use one for "backup" for the other and automatically move traffic to the functioning one. This is seldom the case though, since you don't have network control like this unless you are a large corporation or something to that effect.

I agree you can't have two address for the same site. I thought the idea of a mirror site was having a backup to take over incase one went down for some reason.

Did I miss something?

It's just a copy of the site - like a twin. Most people just FTP the same content to two different locations.

I'm curious to know how one sets up a mirror site. I recently saw a site that claimed it was mirrored on hypermart.

How does one find a host for a mirror and set it up?

Wouldn't that be like having 1 (postal) address for two houses?
