When you buy a domain, you own it and it sits on whatever name servers you tell it. You can later change these name servers or teh entire ownership records if you sell it. Be warned however, buying a domain which is used just to sell is illegal and is called 'cybersquating'.

And yes, I have my onw box...

How does the transfer process work? That is, suppose I park a domain then letter sell/lease/give the domain to someone else. How does the other person take ownership of the domain and transfer it to thier own server?

I'd be glad to extend my nameservers to anyone intrested... No strings attached (I don't host commercially so I'm not looking to get you into a contract). Of course I'm not offering any space but a simple under contstruction page and dns should be enough if your just looking to hold a domain.....

then again, hypermart is free too

Beware of those folks who are willing to reserve a domain name for you, and then charge you a hefty transfer fee if you're going to host somewhere else.

I had to tell internic that I wasn't going to pay, and let the invoice expire by itself, and then do the registration all over again...

Low cost webhosting!

All the more reason to register it yourself and find a host that will let you use their DNS name servers to hold it.

Or did you mean register your name servers? If so you can easily register a host with NetworkSolutions.

Some hosts give them or sell them as part of reseller programs. You usually get them when you lease or colocate a dedicated server. There are also some paid and free ones like granitcanyon.
