I think you made a very good point, Ben... and I had a similar situation while I was on Hypermart a while ago. It really does depend who your target audience is. For example, if you have a webmaster site, such as web hosting, webmaster software, etc. it would be a bad idea to host on Hypermart. Web design is kind of a toss-up: it depends whether you are marketing to the people who are not experienced with the Internet or those who are. However, if you are a restaurant or other business whose customers generally don't know that much about technology, Hypermart may be the perfect place for you.

Hi All

Just want to add my two cents

Hypermart is always a good place to start out from - we started out on hypermart when we had 1 employee (me) and a small design business - over the years we moved to communitech and are now buying a dedicated server (and a have 6 employees and a small, but nice, office in Roslyn NY)

Anyway - if the person's clientele are people who dont use the internet very often (IE, a contractor/cook or whatever) they probaly wouldn't even notice that he is using hypermart - and wouldn't care.

Of course, if the audience is a group of professional internet users, then going on hypermart can be one of the worst decisions ever made (unless you are truly strapped for cash)

Best

Soon that is about to change... I am part of a new free hosting company that will blow Hypermart out of the water. We are basically offering everything, including POP accounts, mySQL, etc. I'll tell you guys the URL when it launches...

Very few will accept business pages; I think Hypermart is the only one. I should warn you that using a free hosting service for a business page makes an extremely bad impression on clients, who immediately assume that the company is cheap, worthless, and unreliable. If you need cheap hosting, try http://www.pair.com (pair Networks, $4.95/month for basic service - not feature-packed, but reliable and fast) or http://www.hypermart.net/ Hypermart, which offers a paid hosting service as well and supports CGI.

There are a few other free sites that I like.

tripod.com - 11mb popup banner

geocities.com 20mb(i think) - branded logo and popup

forturecity.com - 20mb banner or a popup don't remember

angelfire.com - 5mb no banners

freeservers.com - 10mb i think banner at top of your page but can be a short URL hahaha@8m.com

virtualeve.net - ??mb banner at top of page

webjump.com/net cant remember 20-25 mb of space but a top frame is added and looks bad only 1meg downloadable per person per day

Xoom.com says unlimited space but doesn't allow more than 100meg. also puts top frame looks nasty as someone said before.

most of these places are upgradable for about $10 a month and gets rid of the popup banners

if you want a yourname.com its gonna cost 70$ at least internic(sp?) Fee then its probally gonna be $70 every 2 years.

Its your choice. Choose Wisely for, the force is with you
