What exactly is this 'approved host' status, or 'web host guild member'. Has it any real significance?

I haven't heard much about them, but what little I have heard has been good. They are an approved host (if that means much anymore) at a very good host directory which can be found at http://www.hostinvestigator.com/ . That is the only place I could find as HostSearch (a really good place to get information on a host) does not have them listed in their database.

I'm glad you made it over here. I don't much about them, but I think someone here might can help.

Why don't you go with one of the hosts you mentioned in your other post that you said were great?

If you like them, then I think they will be your better choice.

These are basically kudos that host directories give out. For the newbies on the Internet looking for a host, they will often find one of these sites and think it is the authority on hosts so they think any host that is "approved" or a "web host guild member" has to be PERFECT! This is usually far from the truth as these hosts are the large ones and have resources spread so thin that they can't keep up with their clients.

Take for example ISPCheck... Last time I checked they had a $250 application fee to even consider your site as being "approved" and then another $250/mo. if you made the cut and became "approved." Us little hosts can't justify spending that much for this "privledge" as I know we can do a lot for our clients with the $3,000 that we would save in a years time by not paying this. Further, I have learned that ISPCheck doesn't even "check" the host... If you have the $250/mo. and the application fee, your in! Hey, it is money... Why pass it up? Dynamic Internet Solutions has no intention of becoming an "approved" host with ISPCheck (although we have intentions to become approved with some of the honest host directories). Now this information is what I have got from another host that is approved, so it is accurate to the best of my knowledge.

The problem is: All the newbies use these sites so us small hosts can't get our feet in the door. Only those that can afford it have the privledge which is not fair!

Anyway, done with my venting.
