fairhousing - I am not going to argue with you in this forum over the quality of HomeFree, I will send an email for that instead.

The fact remains that I stand by HomeFree 100%, the majority of our clients are more then happy with the script. I am sorry if we can not make everyone perfectly happy or have every version be perfect. After all, were not talking about a 3,000 dollar dedicated script but rather a script that has to serve many people well and does so.

Well.... incase you care anymore... Hypermart's server #4 has 14850 accounts on it (http://infinity2.hypermart.net/test/dir.cgi it's damn near close). As for a serer, they run pII 500's last I heard....

Geocities also runs a ton of accounts. People using homefree (www.solutionscripts.com) which does web bassed accounts and not ftp accounts is known to easily fit 20k - 50k on a server, although 50k accounts makes for one damn slow cgi script.

Again, you're trying to promote your buggy script Ted. Therefore, I will yet again relay my experiences with your script and company. You should have never sold me a script with bugs in it, double header problem still not fixed. My post in your support forum also shouldn't have been deleted because I was telling potential customers about the bugs in the script or my signature was "Disillusioned Homefree Owner". I find what you guys did very unprofessional. Trying to hide the fact that your script isn't as great as advertised, by deleting my post informing potential customers of the script its short falls and selling me and many others a script with bugs.

----------
Isn't it time you started making money with your site!

I think the most important aspect, is what kind of server are you running? If you're running a PII (or better yet, a PIII) Dual 450, with 3 megs level two cache, 512 megs of Ram, hooked to a 100baseT ethernet, then that server can handle many requests, and subsequently, many accounts. In many cases free hosts will put thousands of accounts per server. I think 13,000 like HyperMart is a little much, but, to me 7500 seems to fit well. You have to remember, that a very large portion of these sites will only get a few hits a day. Some won't get any hits on the average day. Additionally, most sites don't have any type of server-side scripting language (like Perl, ASP, PHP, etc) which normally slows servers (espically Perl, since it's a non-threaded language)

My point is, although Free hosts put thousands of accounts per server, most the accounts are using limited resources.

I would say that since fres hosts rely on bulk for their business to profit, they would be more likely to get the maximum out of their resources...or servers.

Server capacity on the average is about 500 accounts. I know we normally only put about 250 max on them because it will increase everyone's performance and make it less likely that someone with a very popular or busy site will affect others on the same server.

If you're considering a free web host, don't be afraid to ask them questions...like what is your server capacity vs. the actual number you place on there? Ask to email current clients and see how they like the service.

Thanks!

What can I expect from a host that I pay like 15$ a month?

My host is http://web66.com . I was always satisfied with the speed and especially the service, but they seem to have problems running their servers on Monday mornings.

It seems to me having multiple domains on a single server wouldn't be too much of a problem (up to a point of course). So if a host has 1,000 domains on one server, it's not like all 1,000 will get hit all at once at the same time.

I'm not saying it's good to 3,000+ domains on one 333mhz server, but there's probably some threshhold up to which service is OK and then starts to degrade rapidly.

Is there any way to check how many domains a host has on a server? Or do you just have to take them at thier word?

Hi,

two years ago we did a little research project and successfully served 5000 domains on a P133 with 32MB-Ram and some Harddisks.
The thing worked fine until it got to many requests (I don't remember the numbers), but at this moment then network-link was already overloaded.

My last Provider hat about 25K Domains on an 333MHz-System. I dropped him due to bad service (performance was ok).

ciao
