Hi Curtis,

and thanks for your reply

We do have some of the skills needed already and some money to spend.
So...do you or anyone else have any kind of answer to the question I had above?

Starting your own hosting hosting firm, is not as complicated/expensive as it may seem.
Many firms offer dedicated servers, preinstalled with all the software, dns, control panels, and admin functions that you would need to start hosting the day the server was set up. Check into a few of these companies:
www.olm.net
rackspace.com
dialtoneinternet.com
burst.net

Most of these firms can get you started with your own hosting server for less than $500 startup, and about $200 per month.

Please feel free to email us at sales@burst.net if you have any questions.

These out of the box packages are more pratical that reseller programs, or installing your own lines and staffing the office where you will contain your network.
Starting your own network, look to spend atleast $25,000 at a bare minimum before you even resemble a Network Operations Center. T3 NOC's your looking at $50,000 startup, and minimum $7000 per month for the loop and 3-5mbps bandwidth..not to even mention regular costs of operation (insurance, rent, equipment)...

Regards

Any comments on running a server hosting company. I would like to get a T1 or T3 line to the internet and put my personal server on it. I would pay for it by letting medium sized companies add their server to my network. They would provide all the hardware, set up the server the way they wanted, and remotely administer the server. I would provide backups, power resets, the trunk line. Any body interested in using a service like this?

Hi Jes!

There are a few things I would suggest thinking about.

1. If you do this, there is a LOT of information you need to be able to run a web hosting service. There is so much to learn about servers, and all of that stuff.

2. You are going to need some big bucks to get started.

3. Or you can do it other ways and make it a lot easier.

 - You can join a referral program.
- You can be a reseller for someone.

I would suggest doing the things listed above or find something else. There are so many hosting companies, it's really hard trying to get your foot planted in this type of field now.

Go for it if you have hundreds of dollars to spend. You need a server, lines, support, knowledge, server manual, site designed, accounting department, merchant account, technicians to install the accounts, much more.

HTH

Curtis
