You should go with mySQL. A SQL database is much more better then a flat text database. It will take a lot of effort and time for you to do it. I recommend you outsource the work or buy the software from someone that has done it.

Putting the database together isn't that hard -- unless you want like 3 million people viewing it with triggers and all sorts of complicated stuff. With you, it sounds like you want something simpler, so it's not as important to learn the ins and outs of database administration.

So you think the best the thing would be to learn Perl first? Do i need to have a strong background on anything else before i should learn that? If not, whats the best way to start learning it? I just really want to learn all this stuff and learn how to put databases like that together. Thanks alot.

MySQL could do that, but if you were going to try to make something like that, it'd be far better to either learn Perl or have somebody that knows it. PHP could also do the trick. MySQL is a backend database, it only stores the data. It does not automatically display it for you. Check http://www.devshed.com/Server_Side/MySQL/ for more info on MySQL and its usage with scripting languages.
