Once again thanks for all your help I was talking to one of my moms friends who does websites for a living and he said he'd hire me and teach me and pay me (I take it theres alot to do but never enough time to do it) so I hope that i learn alot... I think ive spent atleast 7-8 hours messing with jacvascript today... Its safe to say ive had enough have prom tommorrow must sleep thanks, Mike

You can use anything as a topic, a friend, your family, yourself, a pet, how boss your computer is, video games, your favorite show, a hobby, or anything you know well.

I learned almost exactly how Megan did.. Navigator Gold to start, got upset with it, edited the code it made myself and started to see the relations (like <BR> is a line break, <B> is bold etc.).

Then I used online tutorials and regular books to get into JavaScript. And yes, Webmonkey is a really good place when you get to advanced JS or other things.

What's the point of making an online resume if you don't have work samples to show people and/or aren't looking for a job?

As for finding a topic - think a topic that you're interested in (there's got to be something!) and find a sub-topic that hasn't really been covered on the 'net. Heck make a generic personal site. IF you have something to say, say it.

How did I learn HTML? Just fooling around, I guess. I don't really remember actually going through a process of learning it. First, I downloaded Navigator Gold, found out I could make web pages with Composer, got very frustruated with it very qickly, started tinkering with the code, and went from there. It just sort of came to me for the most part. JavaScript was harder, of course. CSS was easy. Webmonkey's tutorials are good. HTML Goodies is good too for beginners (but that 'huh?' stuff is really annoying)

The net is always going to be cluttered - who cares. That's just the nature of it.

I would make a website about something you know about, something you care about. A lot of people have been posting questions about what others think they should make a website about. I just think it's a personal decision and make it about whatever you want. Especially since it's a personal site.

Mike,

Pick a topic you feel very strongly about. Doesn't have to mean anything to anyone but you, since this is a personal site, and a learning experience.

On "cluttering" up the net- I wouldn't worry about it much. There are very few people that haven't "cluttered" the net at one time or another. I'd show you my first page, but I long ago burned the hard drive it resided on.

If nothing else, chronicle your new discoveries as you learn new things about designing web pages. Sort of an online diary, as it were.
