I came across a great web site that has an excellent explanation about web page layout. It's here: http://info.med.yale.edu/caim/manual/

ok.. so... if a person has a tiny monitor.. and worse, they have it set at one of the lower resolutions.. 480 x 600 (do i have that backwards?) would the percentage help with word wrap problems? (have a friend who complains he has to scroll left and right to be able to read paragraphs on a page.. cause it goes past the browser width)

----------
if you dont get it right the first time... try try again...
keep messing up.. and get someone else to do it!

Well I normally design for 600pixels but the beta of my new site is set at 685pixels as I want more freedom in the design.
I also rarely use table % atributes and NEVER mix the % with pixels in a page.

Hi-
I have also found that using pixels in your tables helps too...(i.e. WIDTH="600") however that can be harder than percentages, getting everything to match up...

I usually set my main table width to 615 and any nested tables, I most generally use percentages.

Most viewers tend to have 800x600 resolution, but there are still a lot of people with 640x480 out there.

If you have small images that won't be bothered too much, your best bet is a table with the width set at a certain percentage of the page, ie width="90%". This allows everything to fit on most any screen resolution, while stretching it for the larger ones. Some good sites to look at using this technique are:
http://builder.cnet.com

Hello,
I wonder if you can explain the best width of a page.
On my site, I use 700 as the width. Since it is my belief that most monitors are set up for 800x600. However.. I do notice an aweful lot of sites (including real pro ones) are set at 600. This unfortunately seems to leave a lot of blank space.. and if the page isn't centered, looks offset too much to the left.

I know there is no standard..(yet?) but what is ideal...?

Any idea how many monitors are set at any given width display??

        thanks.. Tracy
