In a graphics editor is the safest way to make the transition so that you can control the compression and/or colours.

FYI, there is a lot of excellent information on file types at www.gettingstarted.net in the graphics section.

www.lviewpro.com has a little program that quite nicely makes the changes. www.ulead.com has the SmartSaver that optimizes your images for the web and allows you to control compression, amount of colours, et cetera. Corel's PhotoPaint export saver does the same thing.

If you are looking for graphics editors, PhotoShop ( www.adobe.com ) is the most expensive and claims the high spot for professionals in print and web graphics, Corel Draw/PhotoPaint ( www.corel.com ) is a powerful equivalent, and cheaper.

Low-range you have PhotoImpact ( www.ulead.com ), PaintShopPro ( www.jasc.com ) as editors that for little bucks will give you big bang. They are completely geared for the web, but be aware that PaintShopPro doesn't have appropriately licenced gif compression, so if this is an issue for you, go with PhotoImpact instead, who does.

Of all of the above, SmartSaverPro is probably your best bet for simple conversions if you don't need an editor and do need web-ready images.

and if you don't have Photoshop ... or even if you do, Irfanview is a terrific little free program that does that and a whole lot more, including search for images.

BTW - in the MS Office pack, Photo Editor does those conversions.

Try this if using Photoshop:

- open the image
- go to File - Save As
- select JPG file type from the dropdown box

If you want to save your image as GIF format, you will have to change it to indexed color first.
