Hi Justin. If you want to make a transparent type image simply adjust the opacity of the layer using the opacity selection box. If you want to make an image fade into white, however, try this...
1. Enter quickmask mode
2. Make a rectangular selection around the area where you want the fade to happen
3. Use the gradient tool to create your fade. It should appear as red on the screen.
4. When you come back into the program, press the delete key and you should get your results. If that doesn't work, press undo, select inverse, and then press the delete key.

Or a simpler way- just make a box selection around the area you want to fade, and use the gradient foreground to transparent... set the foreground to white, and go at it!

I'm not sure what it is in PhotoShop but it should be something like a Transparency Tool. I use Corel, so I don't know what the equivalent is. Maybe Opacity Tool?

Perhaps a search on the more popular tut sites would help?
