Myriad, I took a quick look at Discus on your recommendation. I could be wrong, but it does not seem to have the ability to require admin approval of every post. That's really a key feature I am looking for.

If it had that, I'd try it, even if it is not as visually attractive as the UB and UBB types of boards.

I have just installed the discus package -
very easy to install & use and its Free!
Has profanity checker and registration
features - well I was very impressed anyway

Shame, I was just about to recommend UB. I'm assuming these versions were UB2000 and UB1.6 but have you tried UB1.6.5? It was a hacked up version with many bug fixes (no login loops and all the other problems). You might want to try it. I think I still have a version floating around my computer. Email me if you want it.
