Don't do it with a cable modem. The lowest line speed you should get is a T1. Any lower then this and your server will be unplayerable.

A 400 CPU or better would do. You do need a lot of RAMs to make it playable. 256 meg or higher would do.

Note: If you host a game server, you will spend lots and lots money on bandwidth if you're renting the server/line from a company. The best thing to do is drag a T1 line into your home or work. Trust me in the long run it's worth it.

Quake3 rules

Basically you need bandwidth. If you have that your 2/3 of the way there. Just run the quake3 dedicated server file and you'll be up.

If I were to get a Q3 server i'd look for around T1 speed bandwidth, 500 processor, 128 ram.

But that's just me, you could probably run one off a DSL and 350.

I’m not familiar with the technical requirements of Quake 3. However I don’t believe it’s a highly excessive server program. I know some people that run it over a modem connection.

However, if you’re serious about setting one up at home, you may want to look into DSL. A good DSL connection and a PII/PIII system should work well. I think you have to use Windows 95/98 for the OS, however Quake may be able to run on NT/Windows 2000. If so you may want to seriously consider this, as it will be more stable in a server type environment.

You don’t need any “high end” multimedia hardware with a server. So you can put together a fairly good Windows server for under $1000.

Good luck,
