Download a script and follow the instructions in the readme.txt file. That should get you going.

For on your PC, using Active State's version you view the results of the script in the MS DOS window. For on the server, you view the results in a browser (location of the script is the url -- so www.yourdomain.com/cgi-bin/script.pl or script.cgi).

Ok thanks guys. This should get me started What program do i need to view the scripts and test them? Adam were you saying jsut to upload them to the server and test them out that way? If thats the case what directory to i publish in? Well thanks for all your help. Im gonna really give it a shot!

The book you’ve got (I believe I was the one that recommended it) is pretty basic. Try reading the first chapter completely, even if you don’t understand it. You should be able to grasp a few basic concepts from the first chapter, such as the difference between Perl and CGI.

In terms of testing.. You’ve got a few UNIX hosting accounts, just use one of them for now. If you start programming a lot, you’ll want a server and Perl installed right on your system.

I learned like Suzanne, by installing Perl scripts from public archives and trying to customize them. You’ll learn all the basics this way, i.e. how to set paths, CHMOD, Telnet/FTP, etc.

Thanks guys and girls...Do you have a exact link to where i can download active perl for Windows 2000? I tried downloading one thing but it didnt work.. I think it was for 98. Is there a specific one for 2000? I really am going to learn this stuff so please bear with all my questions im sure i will be having from hear on out

I started with installing a few scripts (doesn't matter really which ones, as long as they work) so I was familiar with the process of installation and what they looked like.

Then I moved to the Dummies book (Perl for Dummies) and then to the O'Reilly cookbook and the Perl 5 Pocket Reference. The whole time playing with and trying out stuff. But really, it was the combination of good references and playing (and asking questions of the folks here).

You can open Perl in a text editor. You don't need anything else to read perl programs, but you do need Perl itself to test it. For windows testing, www.activestate.com has a Perl for windows, which is great for testing for loops and other problems before trying it on your server (where you may have less control over fixing what you break).
