I agree with fairhousing. It's hard for me to write a whole program in any language without a reference book sitting next to me. By dissecting code you'll learn the proper syntax of the language. Once you learn syntax, sky's the limit. That's how I'm familiar with about 6 programming/scripting languages (whatever you choose to call them).

the best way to learn anything in my mind it to disect it. books r just used as a reference resource.

in other words, get a hold of some script and disect them to see what each sub routine, command, etc does.

Thats a great book. I chat with the author now and then on IRC.

It's the best book to buy if you want to learn Perl.

While I have not read that book, I did learn Perl through "Sams - Teach Yourself Perl in 24 hours." It's not that it's a bad book, but I wouldn't recommend it. Just my 2 cents if you were considering that book too.

While I have not read that particular book, the O'Reilly books that I've read have been uniformly well-written and useful. It's a publisher that I trust.
