    <description> &lt;p&gt;Thanks a lot for your help.  I did it.  Just typed get dir.tar in the telnet ftp and it worked!!&lt;/p&gt;

    <description> &lt;p&gt;If you have shell access, you can make a tarball (tar cf filenam.tar directory/) on the server that has the files.  Alternatively, if you have shell access on the server that you want to transfer the files to, you might be able to (in ftp) do get directory_name&lt;strong&gt;.tar&lt;/strong&gt;.  notice the addition of .tar to the directory name.  If the ftp server supports this, it forms a tarball with the directory&#039;s contents in it for you to transfer.&lt;/p&gt;
