I use a program called IndexFinger on my site that is really easy to use and works well. You can find it at

It was written by the same guy who designed the BB program powering these forums and is only $75!

I'm using the same script as polpus: Links v2.0 from Gossamer-Threads. Many people are using it for knowledge bases, articles, etc. Highly recommend it.

Hyperseek is great, too, but much too rich for my blood.

You may want to check them out, unless you just really want to write a new one.

I am almost at the end of finishing my Keyword Search Engine, around 3 more bugs to fix . It is fairly simple, people can enter there site, url and keywords about the site, than people can search and it will sort the results by which entry has the most keywords. I would be willing to send it to you, so you can check it out, get the *feel* of programming a search engine .

There's a great CGI program at www.gossamer-threads.com (I use it on my site) that lets you maintain a Yahoo!-style directory with an extensive admin area and templates for each page generated by the script (making is VERY customizable).

The current price is free for non-profit or personal purposes and $150 for business purposes (you can still try it before you actually pay the registration fee).
