I never got around to changin *.pl to * cgi or checking any paths.

After a heated discussion my provider installed another script and I learned very little about cgi

Funny how little service some providers will give you.

Hmm..I don't really share your view on service. Sure they installed a script. But they won't add pop-boxes or provide me with any other stuff I should get with the package and have been like that for 2 months.

Sounds like a good deal to me from what I understand. Your service provider installed a script for you. If they didn't charge you that's the best service around. In that case who's your service provider? If they charged you I don't want to know.

what a reply.....

i know this problem pretty good:

contact your provider once more and ask them, which directory you have to use to store your scripts in AND how to point the URL to it!

maybe you stored the file into the directory cgi-bin at your server, but when you call it up, the server-software uses an alias that points to another directory!
the path written in the url is not always the local path!
to make a test, upload a html-file into that directory and call it with your browser. if you get "file not found" or something like this, it's a path-problem.
if you get the message "no valid file-type for this directory" like this, the bug is somewhere else, but i think it's just this little thing about the wrong directory, that causes the trouble...

Hehe, I know the feeling cgi is one of the most fustrating things for a web designer in my mind, besides getting lots of traffic to your site. The littlest error can screw up a cgi script and lead to hour upon hour of fustration. Anyways, hang in there it just takes time to learn how to be an efficent web designer. Html is so easy once people learn that they think everything else is gonna be as easy and boy do they have another thing coming, cgi errors, hehe.

Now I get a URI not valid message, or something to that effect.

I troubleshot with FAQ - nothing.
Talked to my provider - "try getting another script.."
Grrr....!!
