Good place to buy RAM online?

I get all my PC parts from newegg.com, the best memory I have come across is by Crucial

yeah newegg has good offers and service... Crucial memory brand is pretty much good, also Kingston...

Okay, thanks guys. Now, how do I know which one to pick? I"m looking at 512 probably, based on the price range. From there it seems to vary based on the PC number (PC 4000 etc.) but I don't know what that means

Better check to see if this site will charge me a fortune to ship...

Look at your motherboard manuals or your old RAM, chechk what type it is, and buy the same type as yours... I implore you buy at least a Gig of RAM for more juice, currently how much RAM do you have? and if your planning to use it with the new one, please dont... If you pair RAMs up make sure their similar sizes, like two 512MB's or two 1Gigs... These would optimize memory usage greatly... I suggest you get a 1Gig for now, its a little price difference, and add another one later... (Check also the Max memory supported by the board, most new MOBO support a minimum of 2Gig)

Megan, that would depend on what your computer can take, and preferably what you already have installed if you are not completely replacing it all.

Around here, a lot of the stores sell PNY i think it is, That is what I had to put in my laptop. (Thank goodness my boss bought it, rediculous price!)

Although I haven't bought memory from them in a while, I used to buy a lot of my memory from mwave.com (usually when buying something else as shipping wasn't that much more). Overall you can find some great deals there.

For price, you may also want to check TigerDirect.com , they get some rediculous deals sometimes. (ie. got e-mail today, 300gig external USB2/Firewire hd for $100.

Just go to Crucial, run their configurator and it will tell you which RAM you need and the sizes. They also ship to Canada. You need to crack open the case and take a peak what is in there now first. Look and see how many sticks are in there and how many open slots. Some only ship with 2 slots and a 512M config often uses 2-256M chips so you have no open slots. If you have no open slots, then you will have to pull one out. That does makes a difference in the size that you buy.

I did that! I've got 1 256 stick in there with 2 open spaces. It's PC 133 - so that's what I need, right? My computer was made in a small local shop so I can't run that utility at Crucial.

It would be better for me to order from a Canadian site becuase otherwise I'll get nailed at the border (#$@#!$ Canadian Customs jerks )

Wow, PC 133? Beleive it or not, I have about 512 of that (2 256 sticks) laying in my dresser right now LOL. Borught some home to isntall in a neighbors old system.

Well I remember when PC133 was good Used it in several machines. Too much to keep up on anymore, so I just buy my systems, don't try to build them.

I do prefer laptops. If you are going to get a laptop, splurge if you can to get the most HD and ram as possible.

For my laptop, (sony VAIO) the memroy was expensive!!! It came with 128 in it when I bought it, and a free upgrade throught kingston i think it was to get another 128. Well I run some memory hungry apps, (fireworks, corel draw, dreamweaver, etc) and then I bought Zend Studio. Needed more memory. However, laptop was maxed out. And now the best you can get for my laptop are 256's, they don't make 512's now. So I have two 128's on my shelf that I should probably sell on e-bay lol) It was over $100 EACH for the 256's I bought for this. (could have saved about $20 buying them online, but still would have been over $200 total).

By then had shown my boss how more efficient things were with zend studio, Told him he could buy me memory, or buy zend studio for my desktop system. We negotiated, he paid for one of the memory, i bought the other.

Anyhow max it out. I was just looking at best buy, nice gateway AMD 64 with 1 gig of ram, 100 gig HD, 15.4 display for about 1300. (I know two people that have these, they are nice rocking systems, and from the one friend when he got a little ticked, takes a heck of beating!)

Have some other firends that have bought the dell 9300's, they are nice, but they are huge with that 17" display. Now I see HP finally decided to put a number keypad in their 17" models, while toshiba, still uses a "compact" design by moving the `/~ key down to beside the spacebar? I mean come on, the days of they keayboard barely fitting are over. LOL

I wish I could afford a new system right now! Well, I probably could if I didn't just get back from England and already bought tickets to go to France over Christmas. Oh, the pleasures of having an English boyfriend!!

A bunch of people I work with have tablet laptops. Now those are wicked cool

I was looking at those at best buy as well, wasn't impressed with them too much. The screen was way too dark and the tracking was off on the pen. Then pen issue I'm sure probably oculd be recalibrated (like on my palm). Dunno, Guess I don't have a need for that feature to justify the extra $$

I should probably look into new systems a bit just to see how much I'd have to spend ... might not be all that much really since I don't need a monitor or anything...

Yeah thats why I said read your MOBO manuals and see what upgrades you can do... To help you out quite a bit, you can change MOBO,s and get a 1Gig RAM and put back your HDD's and other external stuff back in which gives you a new PC sort of, if you set up for a new laptop, then have a little patience and maybe that cool english boyfriend of yours might give you a laptop for christmas... wish. wish.

I was talking to my boyfriend about this last night. He knows more about this than I do (but less than you guys!) We were talking about completely rebuilding my machine with new components but that started to get expensive. No point in putting that much money into this machine. I won't be able to take it with me if I end up moving over there!

What I might actually do is buy a stick of PC133 for cheap on ebay. That will tie me over until I figure out what I'm doing and what kind of a new machine I should get. The boyfriend just bought a new laptop (the guy has 3 computers already!!!) which he might let me borrow for awhile

Anyways just dont throw the old PC right away make it a music server, I have three of my old PC's running as Music servers, installed one for my brother the other to my Room and the last one in the living room... (Just a thought)

When you borrow your BF's PC install a cheeky theme which he can never replace and ramble the icons and customize it really far-off, so that instead for asking it back hell give it to you instead.... he he he (sheepish smile)
