Guidelines for Writing Website Reviews

Everyone has useful comments to make about a website. Both new internet users and experienced web developers have important contributions to make. When you post your own site for review, please remember that if you take the time to help out others, you will get better feedback in return. Not only will you get more reviews from your peers, but more thorough ones that will help you to make your site even better!

How the Process Works

You are required to review other sites before your own request will be approved. When you post a new topic it will go into a moderation queue. The moderators will check to see if you have posted some reviews before releasing your thread. The critiques you post must meet some basic qualifications as set out below (under "What We're Expecting"). If you do not meet the posting qualifications you will receive a private message from the moderator as a reminder to complete your reviews.

Why Reviewing Other Sites is Required

The regulation was put in place to hinder those members who use this forum to spam our community, or simply to increase their linkbacks. Before we put the requirement in place we found that many people would post a "critique request" and not even return to the forum to read responses. This is spam.

In adddition to this, looking at other sites with a critical eye will help you become a better designer. Once you learn to pick out the flaws in other designs you will be better able to notice your own mistakes. If you have a legitimate reason for not reviewing other sites please contact an administrator to explain.

What We're Expecting

What we are looking for here is an honest effort. Three reviews are suggested, but even one good, thorough review may be enough. You are expected to come up with some constructive criticism for the sites you review. A one-line response is not enough! See the next section for some suggestions for things to include in your review.

The reviews you post should:

be a least 3 lines long
include some constructive feedback about the site

You are also expected to do this each time you request a review. If you post two sites, you are expected to do 6 reviews. If you repost your site again after several months you will be expected to post some additional reviews.

Exceptions may be made for members who participate regularly in other areas of the forum.

Tips for Writing Effective Website Reviews

From a user's perspective:

Is the site attractive to you? Why/why not?
Is it easy to use? Can you find what you're looking for?
Do you understand what the site is about?
If this site is offering a product or service, would you sign up or buy it?
If you were interested in this site's content, would you come back? Why/why not? If the site has a forum community, would you sign up and post? Why/why not?
Is the content good? Do you understand what the text is saying? Do you notice any spelling/grammar mistakes?

From a designer/developer's persepective

You may choose to comment on:

colour scheme
common design principles (alignment, white space, visual organization etc.)
common design mistakes
usability
appropriateness of design & contenet
branding & marketing
graphics quality
browser compatibility
resolution
function of widgets/dhtml/forms, et cetera
image compression
information architecture
consistency
coding/validation
use of technologies

Responding to Website Reviews

When responding to reviews of your site, always be respectful of other people's opinions. Remember that your fellow members have spent valuable time and energy writing their reviews of your site. They are trying to help you make your site better. If you are dismissive, disrespectful, or argumentative they may feel as if they have wasted their time writing a review of your site. Other members may see this response and refrain from helping you in the future.

The Website Critique Area is one of the most popular forums at TWF. As such, we have a few requirements for posting in this forum:

Review Other Sites - You are required to review at least three other sites before your own request will be approved. When you post a new thread it will go into a moderation queue. The moderators will check to see if you have met the review requirements before releasing it to the forum. Please see Guidelines for Writing Website Reviews for more information about what we expect.
This requirement is here to discourage members who request a critique simply as a means of self promotion or a source of free advice. If you would honestly like some help with your site, and are willing to give a little bit back to the community, then this request should not be a problem. Please contact an administrator if you have any concerns.
Acceptable Site Content - Sites containing pornography, warez or other illegal material and/or associations with such material will not be reviewed – such threads will not pass the moderation queue. In addition, sites in direct competition with The Webmaster Forums will not be allowed.
Site Ownership - You must be the owner or the authorized designer of the website you post for review. If you are neither of these, DO NOT post a review request for the site - you have no legal or ethical right to do so.
Subject Line Format- Your subject line should contain your site title ("The Webmaster Forums"), URL ("webmaster-forums.net"), or a descriptive title (Webmaster Community for review). The subject line of any thread in this forum not meeting this format will be edited to comply.
Clickable Links - Please include an active link to your website, make it easy for people to reach your site to review it. You can do this by simply typing out the full url (http://www.webmaster-forums.net) or by using BB code.
Posting Frequency - You may only post *ONE* review request for a site every three months. If you make changes to the site after your original request, please continue with your original thread. This helps us to keep all discussion about a certain site in one place. This regulation applies to the site not the member. You may post a new thread for a different site you have created.
Law of the Land - All reviews are simply advice. If you receive a review that you feel is harsh, please understand that the individual is trying to help you and did not make the post to offend you.

If you have any questions or comments regarding these guidelines please contact a Moderator or Administrator. If your post does not appear on the forums within 24 hours it is probably because you have not followed the guidelines. Please check the list again and make sure you have followed the rules. In particular, make sure you have posted at least three good quality reviews of other sites. If you feel that you have followed these guidelines, and your post still has not been published, please send me a PM.

Accepting Critiques For My New Web Design

Ok, so I've put some real time into this website & I believe that there are still changes to be made. I'd love it if some of you inspectors took a minute to critique it and tell me how I could improve on what I have created so far. I don't consider myself a professional, but I have been working with web designing for the better part of 15 years as a hobby. Built this site with a bunch of customized CSS. I have changed it several times, since I launched it (I'm very indecisive).

I'm hoping to get some design pointers on what I have done and maybe any suggested changes to make the design flow more consistent. I have made about 20 different versions of the home page. The current home page got the most thumbs up but I still would like to spruce it up a little.

The website's design is still a work in progress, however I will take on board all comments made. If you have any suggestions for improvement, let me know. I won't be offended. I know it's far from perfect.

Simple & Efficient By Design - SongRepo

Hi guys. I've been working on SongRepo for a while now, and I decided to get some feedback.

The site is designed to accomplish its mission whilst being as simple and speedy as possible. Every line of code was written from the ground up to be as efficient as I can make it. It's true the site doesn't have all the bells and whistles normally associated with this type of project, but it makes up for it in reliability and speed. It gets its data from Last.FM and YouTube.

Many many details to talk about but that's not why I'm here. I would like to have your thoughts on the design, most importantly. Be sure to go to the site and have a click around to get the full experience. As a fellow developer, you might appreciate the nature of the site and what it stands for. It's 'pure' and free of all distractions.

Atleast, that's the idea. Let me know your thoughts.

The most realistic typing test website

I created this typing test to be different than the others. There are thousands of 'tests' out there, but 99% of them are worthless in my opinion. I wanted to make the most realistic way to practice your typing, http://official-typing-test.com - It sounds simple, but I guess nobody has figured out that a typing test should just let you type, then figure out your WPM. Some of the others will, when you make an error, disable all of the keys except the one that they want you to push next. Some won't let you correct your errors at all. Some are just easy, random words. And I think that every one I have tried will alert you if you make an error. The error alerts are personal preference, but all of the other things will actually hurt your real life typing skills.

Hey guys

We have just launched our brand new holiday home rental site PlacesToStay.com. I would love to hear any feedback you may have on the design and any recommendations you may have for improvements.

We designed the site with the goal of establishing a strong brand identity and also took a responsive web design approach to the site to accommodate iphone and ipad users.

The whole booking process was also simplified, making it easy for the user to access and interact with the booking engine. We believe that good imagery for each of the properties listed is essential in the overall offering of the site, so the site design also accommodates this.

We have also highlighted the property facilities and introduced an effective filter system which allows users to quickly find the property to suit each individual taste.
