Plesk on Ubuntu 16.04: 'error while loading shared libraries: libicuuc.so'

Just had this weird issue installing Plesk on a new Ubuntu 16.04 server:

error while loading shared libraries: libicuuc.so.55

(I imagine the number at the end may change according to whichever version of the library it's trying to load.)

I solved it by running:

sudo apt install libicu55

Apparently the missing file is a Unicode library, presumably used for Plesk's internationalisation. Totally safe to install.

The attached text file contains the code.

Webmin Apache Virtual Host Does not Work Properly

I have a home server that I would like to migrate my GoDaddy hosting account to, since GoDaddy php performance seems to be pathetic at best.

My server already has webmin, apache, mysql, and php running. The server is headless and has an internal webpage that I access. I have been able to create a virtual host and direct external traffic to the directory that I have created for this host. My problem is that I am only able to direct traffic to one website or the other.

The only way I can get traffic to be directed to my /example.com website folder is by selecting "Any" for the virtual server address. Otherwise the default server, which hosts my internal webpage, gets all of the traffic, regardless of the URL. I have spent a few days on Google and reading tutorials. Every tutorial says that my settings should work, but they do not.

Does anyone have any suggestions? What documents should I post to get the best help?

Configuring MySQL + InnoDB using Puppet

I've just been struggling with problems getting InnoDB and MySQL configured using Puppet. There seems to be very little help with this out there, so thought I'd post this for anyone searching for some.

If your Puppet manifest is failing to apply and there are errors like either of these appearing in your MySQL log (possibly located in /var/log/mysql/error.log):

InnoDB: Error: auto-extending data file ./ibdata1 is of a different size
InnoDB: 1152 pages (rounded down to MB) than specified in the .cnf file:
InnoDB: initial 64000 pages, max 0 (relevant if non-zero) pages!
120929 18:59:23 InnoDB: Could not open or create data files.
120929 18:59:23 InnoDB: If you tried to add new data files, and it failed here,
120929 18:59:23 InnoDB: you should now edit innodb_data_file_path in my.cnf back
120929 18:59:23 InnoDB: to what it was, and remove the new ibdata files InnoDB created
120929 18:59:23 InnoDB: in this failed attempt. InnoDB only wrote those files full of
120929 18:59:23 InnoDB: zeros, but did not yet use them in any way. But be careful: do not
120929 18:59:23 InnoDB: remove old data files which contain your precious data!

InnoDB: Error: log file ./ib_logfile0 is of different size 0 41943040 bytes
InnoDB: than specified in the .cnf file 0 52428800 bytes!

read on!

The problem is: InnoDB does not handle changing database or log file sizes gracefully; Puppet installs MySQL, which automatically starts and creates the InnoDB database and log files according the default configuration, Puppet applies your InnoDB settings, then tries to restart MySQL, which refuses to start because the database and log files already exist and are the 'wrong' size.

ibdata1 is of a different size problem

To workaround the ibdata1 file being the wrong size it seemed safer to just create a new InnoDB data file, since this manifest may be used on different servers. So the relevant part of the Puppet manifest now looks like:

mysql::server::config { 'innodb':
  settings => {
    'mysqld' => {
      'innodb_data_file_path' => 'ibdata2:1000M:autoextend',
      [... other stuff ...]
    }
  }
}

ib_logfile0 and ib_logfile1 is of different size problem

The ib_logfile{0,1} problem is a little harder to work around. Here's the relevant part of the manifest:

$innodb_log_file_size = 40
$innodb_log_file_byte_size = $innodb_log_file_size * 1024 * 1024

# InnoDB does not handle changing log file sizes gracefully.
# This works around that by stopping MySQL and checking if the log file size
# matches the configured size, if not the logs are deleted.

exec { 'fix_logfiles':
  command   => "/etc/init.d/mysql stop; rm /var/lib/mysql/ib_logfile0 /var/lib/mysql/ib_logfile1",
  path      => "/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/bin",
  subscribe => Mysql::Server::Config['innodb'],
  onlyif    => "test -e /var/lib/mysql/ib_logfile0 -a \$(du -b /var/lib/mysql/ib_logfile0 | awk '{ print \$1 }') -ne ${innodb_log_file_byte_size}",
}

Mysql::Server::Config['innodb'] -> Exec['fix_logfiles'] -> Exec['mysqld-restart']

mysql::server::config { 'innodb':
  settings => {
    'mysqld' => {
      [... other stuff ...]
      'innodb_log_file_size' => "${innodb_log_file_size}M",
      [... other stuff ...]
    }
  }
}

$innodb_log_file_size
should be changed to the desired log file size (in MB).

This checks if the ib_logfile0 log file exists and if its size is different from the desired log file size, if not MySQL is shutdown and both ib_logfile0 and ib_logfile1 are deleted.

Note this is a bit hackish, particularly since it just checks against ib_logfile0 and assumes: if it's present and the wrong size, ib_logfile1 will be too. But then, if InnoDB would handle things like data and log files changing size more gracefully, this pain wouldn't be necessary.

EDIT: Also, I'm pretty new to Puppet, so exercise caution when doing this. I offer no warranties including merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose.

Puppet: Exec[set_mysql_rootpw]/returns: change from notrun to 0 failed

I had this error trying to manage MySQL in Puppet and thought I'd post my solution for anyone searching the Interwebs:

err: /Stage[main]/Mysql::Config/Exec[set_mysql_rootpw]/returns: change from notrun to 0 failed: mysqladmin -u root password mypass returned 1 instead of one of [0] at /etc/puppet/modules/mysql/manifests/config.pp:94

Specifically what was failing for me was the initialisation of MySQL, from my manifest:

class { 'mysql::server':
  config_hash => { 'root_password' => '<password>' }
}

Puppet was attempting to set the root password (which is actually blank having just installed MySQL), but there was already a password in /root/.my.cnf so instead of logging in to MySQL with a blank root password, Puppet was trying to use the password from /root/.my.cnf.

So, just run:

rm /root/.my.cnf

Then re-apply your Puppet manifest to get past the error. Hope this helps someone!

a Padded Cell our articles site!

making vhosts to work

I hope I put this in the right forum.
Local test server - WAMP
The documentroot is not functioning. Apache error log indicates wamp/www added to the path of each virtualhost.
I want the vhosts to work as written. I do not want my sites at wamp/www/skip

site:
g:/skip

hosts file:
127.0.0.1    skip.localhost
127.0.0.1

vhosts file:

NameVirtualHost *:80

    DocumentRoot "g:/wamp/www"
ServerName 127.0.0.1
ServerAlias Localhost

    DocumentRoot "g:/skip"
ServerName skip.local
ServerAlias skip

    Options Includes Indexes FollowSymLinks MultiViews
Options Indexes FollowSymLinks
AllowOverride all
Order Deny,Allow
Deny from all
Allow from skip

I have spent hours research this and fail to find solution.
Many thanks to all who help.

Starting with CentOS 6

I just installed CentOS 6 on Win 7 / Virtual Box (http://centos.sonn.com/6.0/isos/i386/CentOS-6.0-i386-LiveCD.iso). I want to set up a server at home and learn how to do it etc. I am wondering about few things:

1) Do I have the right program (It has a GUI and I am not sure if it is the server "edition"; I followed the following video and person is talking about Server, so... (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FOkHJ2Q4vR4)

2) Does everything about Red Hat, like books, certification training materials, tutorials on the net etc, apply to CentOS as well, or is it better to stick just to CentOS materials

3) What is the general direction I need to go now (modify the system according to my needs, learn command line, istall a program like Webmin or cPanel, install MySQL and PHP etc; just looking for genereal ideas of how is it gonna look etc)

Thank you

Best practice for calculating media file downloads?

Hi,

I need to calculate the number of video and audio file downloads from our media server.

Our media server hosts all our audio files (mp3) and video files (mp4) and it is dedicated to this task i.e. it doesn’t host any html files or image files etc, and we parse our IIS log files monthly using Stone Steps Webalizer.

When I look at the Webalizer stats most of the ‘hits’ are ‘code 206 partial content’ and most of the remainder are ‘code 200 ok’. So for instance our most recent monthly Webalizer stats look something like this -

Total hits: 1,600,000
Code 200 - ok: 300,000
Code 206 - Partial Content: 1,300,000

The total hits figure is much larger than I would expect it to be in relation to the amount of data being served (Total Kbytes). I suspect that Webalizer does not group multiple 206 partial content response codes from the same IP/visit - i.e. multiple 206's that should be considered a single request/download – and because of this the total hits figure is being vastly inflated.

What do you think? Does anyone have any experience in this area that they can share?

Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks
FD

htaccess redirection

I have a domain, eg dom.com, with various sub-domains, eg sub.dom.com. I would like to change the homepage of dom.com from index.html to index.php. To achieve this I added the line "redirect 301 /index.html http://dom.com/index.php" to .htaccess. Although this works for the main domain it also redirects the homepages of the subdomains to dom.com/index.php. How can I restrict the re-direct to the root directory of the top domain and leave sub-domains and sub-directories untouched?

PHP 5 php-fpm memory leak?

I set up a Linode 768 a couple months ago using the "Lemp stack lite" at VPSbible.com (Ubuntu, nginx, phpfpm, etc).

It's been going well except that I've noticed a pattern with memory use.
Over time--usually about a week--the memory used (I watch this using HTOP.... Linux command line) and swap slowly increase. Eventually my disk IO starts to get really busy.
I'm guessing it's swapping a bit heavily at that point.

By accident, I discovered that if I restart PHP-FPM, the memory used immediately drops 50% and swap drops about 66%.
Slowly increases again over a week or so.

So... do I have some kind of memory leak? Don't know much about these things.

My php5-fpm.conf settings:
pm = static
pm.max_children = 10

Looks like everything else that might impact mem use is set to defaults (commented out) unless there is another file somewhere setting them.

It's not a huge deal... just kind of an extra bother to have to restart php weekly.

Prefered Server Control Panels

Just curious what people use/prefer as far as a control panel.

I come from doing everything by hand, and prefer that. I can keep everything nice and clean.

I just got a dedicated server last week from 1&1 (couldn't pass up the deal they had with first 4 months free). Since I will be offering hosting service for sites that I don't directly maintain (what I am used to), I decided to utilize a control panel.

I have used on one or two sites before the customer side of cPanel, and for one client the full admin of cPanel. Was pretty straight forward and nice.

1&1 offered their custom control panel (nah!) and Plesk for free. cPanel, well, I'd have to pay for it. So I gave Plesk a run for a week.

Well after a week of plesk, I gave up. Didn't care for how it lays out file structure, support from 1&1 for it was reference back to plesk's support, whose site that day the search wasnt working. Heck even to add a second IP to my server, Plesk errored, 1&1 couldn't get it, they had to forward it on Plesk support for them to do it. Interesting part, plesk support added it to my sever... I didn't give them my login... Hmmm....

So last night I re-imaged the server to a minimal install, and after realizing that there are places that do sell the cPanel license month-to-month instead of yearly (just spent a bunch of money on getting business started, so a ~$450 payment right now was pushing it. )

So after waiting a LONG time for cPanel to install onto the server (hint, start it, go grab a bite to each or something LOL), I have my server up and running cPanel nice and well, and have all my hosting/e-mail moved over from shared hosting. All seems good so far.

For me, cPanel, just seems laid out better, and thing are easier to navigate (again, I'm used to managing servers manually, not using control panels at all).

So for those of you who have tried more than one way to manage your servers, which have you found you like? Anyone write their own custom (I thought of this, need server up ASAP to accept customers)

-Greg

Setting PHP Mail function on linux for SMTP server

Just unsure how to do this? In my php.ini file, there is the option to set a SMTP server, however, this is for windows?
How can I link my mail function to my SMTP server when php is installed on linux - Ubuntu 10.4. Thanks.

two domains... one site... what to do?

I've got a somedomain.org site and I took the somedomain.com too because people seem to get mixed up.
The question is, what to do w/the .com. Currently, I'm at a shared hosting set up with cpanel and set up a "redirect" in their cpanel applet. So anybody who uses .com ends up at .org.

But I'm moving shortly to a vps I'm managing myself. So I have some different options now, maybe. Do I want .com users to be redirected to .org or is there some better idea? Suggestions?

I've see stuff about "301 redirects" somewhere but don't know beans about that.

Goldman Sachs Facebook package sets bank up to manage possible Initial Public Offering

A Goldman Sachs Facebook expenditure of $450 million was the biggest news on Wall Street Monday. Goldman Sachs was joined by a Russian business which invested an additional fifty million dollars, which boosted Facebook's implied industry value to $50 billion. As a new Facebook shareholder, Goldman has positioned itself to underwrite a predicted Facebook IPO that Wall Street has been eying greedily. Individuals are applying for paydayloans to be ready to jump on this bandwagon if it goes through.

Goldman Sachs creating its package with Facebook

The social network phenomenon will benefit a lot from Goldman Sachs investment. More industry worth than eBay, Yahoo and Time Warner will be put into it. Digital Sky Technologies, a Russian investment firm, added fifty million dollars to its stake in Facebook. In 2009 DST paid $200 million for a 2 percent stake in Facebook, and by buying shares from Facebook employees is reported to have increased its stake to about 10 percent. Facebook has no have to borrow cash even though it's a private company that won’t disclose finances. In 2010, Facebook reported owning a ton of money. About $2 billion was reported. Probably the most visited site within the United States last year was Facebook rather than Google too.

Goldman doing what it has to before Volker rule

With the Dodd-Frank financial reform bill, it seems like more people know the plan Goldman Sachs wants to take with the Facebook expenditure. The financial reform bill has a part in it that is called the “Volker rule.” The cash spent with Wall Street banks’ own money is limited when it comes to investments. Banks are given a few years to comply with new regulations with the financial reform legislation. The Goldman Sachs Facebook package indicates that the firm is taking advantage of that grace period to make lucrative private equity deals with its $900 billion balance sheet. Wealthy clients are being recruited to put up to $1.5 billion into Facebook by Goldman.

Goldman eyes sought after Facebook IPO

The Securities and Exchange Commission has been investigating Facebook because of possible private trading on the secondary sector of the company’s shares. The value of Facebook went up a ton this past year while the company tried to stop employees from selling the shares at a high price. There are rules on the number of shareholders allowed in private companies by the Securities and Exchange Commission. 499 shareholders are the maximum. With 500 shareholders, Facebook would have to make its finances public. Also, its shares would have to be registered. Facebook may have to go into an Initial Public Offering if the Goldman Sachs Facebook package goes through. Goldman would end up with huge fees and financial windfall for its clients if Goldman were to underwrite a Facebook IPO as Goldman owns so many shares.

Is my server overheating?

Hello,

I just moved a website to another server on which DirectAdmin is installed. I now checked the "System Information" which tells me the following:

Vendor ID		GenuineIntel
Processor Speed (MHz)	2400.085
Total Memory		1035108 kB
Free Memory		152836 kB
Total Swap Memory	2097144 kB
Free Swap Memory	1903100 kB

I don't know much about server management, but as far as I understand only 150MB of the 1GB is used. Is this normal or am I having problem here..?

APC Article: SSH - Managing file permissions using CHMOD

A new article is available on aPaddedCell, part of a series on using SSH to administer a server, this covers setting file and directory permissions. Here is the summary:

When installing scripts on your website you will often be asked to change the permissions, or CHMOD (change mode). The instructions for doing this often include cryptic sets of numbers, such as
chmod 775
There are actually two ways of setting permissions using chmod, using numbers or words.

Read it here: SSH: Managing file permissions using CHMOD.

Another article in the series will be released next week, on creating directories with full access for multiple users.

Nightly Backup script

I had to set this up for a friend, and thought I would share it here. Note, his system has dual 250 gig drives, one dedicated for his /backup directory, and his nightly backup is just under 80 megs, so he opted to save copies for 6 months. This script does a full nightly back up for his CentOS system.

The main thing you need to change is the first 3 variables, a username and password for account that has permissions to backup the databases, and the path (no trailing slash) as to where to put the backups. MAKE SURE THIS IS NOT INSIDE A DIRECTORY TO BE BACKED UP!

Also, the last line, 4320 is how old of files to delete. (note, this will use the timestamp of the last time ACCESSED, not created or modified). this is in hours (24 hours * 180 days for his use)

If you have more you want to backup, duplicate the first tar command you see, change home.tgz to be the final compressed filename and the other home is the directory (relative to the root) you are backing up. (the line after it does selected backups of what I wanted from his /etc directory

The mysql backup portion will loop through all databases (other than the "test" one installed on default).

Assuming you ran this script as is, here is how it lays things out. All you need defined before first running it will be the /backup directory, it creates all else.

/backup/current -> this is the latest copy backed up. This should be copied and taken off-site often
/backup/current/data -> this is the compressed dump of the databases.
/backup/current/files -> this holds a compressed copy of the files you told it to back up
/backup/current/*.txt -> filelists of what was backed up, and mysql check report

/backup/dated -> each time the script runs, "current" gets moved into here, under yesterday's date
/backup/dated/2010-10 -> all the files for the month of October, 2010
/backup/dated/2010-10/2010-10-28 -> what was in current on October 28, 2010

Here is the script, enjoy. I welcome comments for improving it.

#!/bin/bash

dbuser="backup" # Give only SHOW DATABASES, SELECT, LOCK TABLES, and RELOAD permissions on all DB's
dbpass="savemystuff"
buroot="/backup"

yfolder=`date -d yesterday +%Y-%m-%d`
ymfolder=`date -d yesterday +%Y-%m`
tfolder=`date +%Y-%m-%d`
tprefix=`date +%Y-%m-%d_`
mfolder=`date +%Y-%m`

mkdir $buroot/
mkdir $buroot/current
mkdir $buroot/dated
mkdir $buroot/dated/$ymfolder
mkdir $buroot/dated/$ymfolder/$yfolder

mv $buroot/current/* $buroot/dated/$ymfolder/$yfolder

mkdir $buroot/current/files
mkdir $buroot/current/data

cd /
tar -czvf `echo $buroot/current/files/$tprefix home.tgz | sed 's/ //'` home > $buroot/current/list_home.txt
tar -czvf `echo $buroot/current/files/$tprefix etc.tgz | sed 's/ //'` etc/hosts etc/httpd* etc/php* etc/yum* > $buroot/current/list_etc.txt

/usr/bin/mysqlcheck --user=$dbuser --password=$dbpass --fast --all-databases > $buroot/current/check_db.txt

cd $buroot
for i in `echo show databases|mysql -u $dbuser -p$dbpass`
do
  if [ "$i" != "information_schema" -a "$i" != "Database" -a "$i" != "test" ]
  then
    mysqldump -u $dbuser -p$dbpass $i > "$tprefix$i"
    tar -czf "$buroot/current/data/$tprefix$i.tgz" "$tprefix$i"
    rm "$tprefix$i"
  fi
done

/usr/sbin/tmpwatch 4320 $buroot/dated

PS. I know the line in the tar files is messy with the echo piped to sed, but I couldn't figure out how to butt text up against a variable. I welcome how the heck to do that (with leaving the _ in the variable)

using shared host mail server with my VPS server

I have two hosting accounts with two separate providers. One is a shared hosting account the other is a VPS.

I use my VPS for video and heavy media stuff and I use some Java applications all of which are not available on a shared hosting account.

While i could install a mail server and / or a DNS server on my VPS, i chose to keep my shared managed hosting for the DNS and mail server as this would relieve me of the head ache of a mail server and DNS server so i can concentrate on application development.

My VPS is running ubuntu 10 and apache2.

My question is simple. How can i configure my VPS to use my shared hosting mail server. I have set up virtual hosts on my VPS and have multiple domains / DNS zones / addon domains in my shared hosting account all with their own email addresses. The A records in my shared account for each domain points to my VPS IP address.

I was thinking I need to specify the MX records in my apache conf file in sites-enabled directory, but I would need to login to my mail server?

Basically, what I need to do is allow my applications on my VPS access to a mail server to send automated emails, like login information.

setting up a ubuntu 10 web server

I have just started renting my first VPS.

I ordered it installed with Ubuntu 10. I did not opt to have any plesk license or any other server management system like Webmin to be installed either simply because I want to learn how it is all put together.

My questions are really, am I doing things correctly? This what I have done so far:

install apache2

create a new SSH user

Stop root access in SSH

configure the root directory to be in home/

install Bind9 and utils - By default the cache is installed and active?

I need to set up my primary DNS server and configure my nameserver addresses / CNAME records to point to my IP address?

I could setup an additional secondry DNS server using my second IP address?

add a virtual host to apache configuration file with any additional configuration

add more DNS zones for every domain I have and add these additional domains to my apache config file as virtual hosts.

I need to activate the pre-installed firewall and only allow access on port 80 (http) and port 22 (SSH)?

Maybe change SSH from port 22 to 22222 for security reasons.

install MySQL

install PHP5

Maybe install Tomcat6 if I want to use Java

Maybe install FFMPEG if I want to use video

In terms of security what else do I need to consider?

Good Value Professional VPS Hosting

Zend optimiser can it compete with Java

So I have been looking to learn a new language namely Java.

It has more standards and everything is packaged better for security and management. But I originally thought that Java would be alot fast than PHP especially when processing data and making calculations: however, I came across Zend Optimiser server. So As I understand this will cache the interpreted / compiled PHP script for future use. So would this make PHP as fast as Java if the server is reading machine code rather than having to run it through the PHP engine before sending it to the browser?

PHP6 looks set to become really object orientated which is a good thing but can it compete with Java - just web based applications?

Good Value Professional VPS Hosting

Plesk VPS Email problems

Hello,

I've been running into a few problems lately with our VPS.

We got a VPS:

     Parallels Plesk version 9.5.2
OS : Linux 2.6.9-023stab051.3-smp

Talked to our provider and their tech support said that our VPS is limited to 128 processes. Whenever we send out a bulk email, i.e. to a few hundred recipients at once, SMTP (our mail server is PostFix) goes berserk and starts doing too many processes. Spoke to them again today, they said that i need to throttle my emailing.

Can someone recommend me what to do or how to set up my VPS so that it doesn't freak out and shut down our site?

Thank you in advance.

I cant find any information on how to add a subdomain in webmin / virtualmin

Is it possible to take backup of our web site on external hard disk

Hello,

My self Pollard and I am managing my client website. The web site size is huge, that is the database and files both will be around 15 GB. We are using a dedicated server. Following is the configuration of the server

120 GB Hard Disk
2 GB Ram
Windows 2003 server

Since the web site size is heavy we have requested our website hosting company that is it possible to take the back up of 1 month on other external hard drive and keep every 3 alternate days backup on the same server. They agreed upon to keep the data of 3 alternate days on the same server but they didn’t agree to keep 1 month backup on external hard drive

The following below were their reply

“Kindly note that it is not possible to take backup on external hard drive. Kindly check and confirm the same. We will be happy to help you if any further assistance is required.”

Please suggest us how to proceed further as we need backup in an emergency.

Thanks,
Pollard
