A good start. You've got all the basic elements - logo, navbar etc. You've got content that is fairly well-written which is good. What you really need to do is work on creating a design style for your site. Choose a colour scheme and use it consistently. Think about what kind of shapes and imagery you want to use. Look at other designs and get ideas. You've got your page up and working, now you need to work on really designing it. Maybe take some of those Evangelion pictures and cut them up, piece them together... be creative! Definitely use more colour.
You say that it would cost you $40 AUD/month to host your site ad-free. I'm not sure how big your site is or what your exchange rate is, but you can get decent hosting for as low as $6 US/month for a small site. Although I'm not seeing any ads here at all (probably because I have pop-ups turned off). But, not serious need to worry about that right now IMO.

I agree that you have got a good start here but it does seem a bit disjointed and could do with the good strong colour scheme and a definite design/layout. Another good point is to learn CSS as this gives you lots of options to enhance the site and will help you to cut down on cluttered coding. What did you use to create the site?

I used FrontPage although I have had experience with HTML in previous sites.
The main reason I use FrontPage is that my Dad gets it with his MSDN universal subscription so I get it for free.

Pop-up ads are so "in your face", maybe it's just me, but i almost get offended because it's like a pushy salesman. Haven't even had a chance to look at your site, and i'm already being confronted and am having to deal with closing out pop-up boxes. Does anyone ever click ads anymore??

The only way to get rid of popups is to get rid of the Namezero bar with Javascript, but that's slightly illeagal.
I've gone through every page and put in CSS now, If anyone want's to see the difference

I didnt get to see it before the changes - sorry
but from what i see now, a few things you could consider
dont have your margins at zero for this type of layout.
make the navigation section (left gray box) with text and table rather than a image map
If the pop up complaints get to bad, there are other free hosts out there that just use a frame or banner or only one pop up.
when you use span tags, you dont have to add into every tag, its english so is standard unless someones browsers isnt, you can however state the language in a meta tag which is for the whole site.
If you are going to use an updated date, use the word of the month (or first few letters), people in USA etc use month/day/year where as the rest of the world uses day/month/year, so something like 01/10/05 could be seen as Jan or Oct. using 24-Jan-01 or something isnt confusing
there is a big scroll bar at 800x600 in NS4.7 caused by your css margins
as mentioned you just need to find a theme/layout/style and work it some more, contents there, just have a lil fine tuning to do
also have need to use alt tags on your images, especially your Italy ones, looks like they are of a fort? a stiry, description would be good for your visitors
<?bhb if(broken){ echo("It wasn't me
"); } ?>

What do you mean for not having margins at zero?
The was a piece of code that Frontpage puts in, I wasn't sure why it was there so I've kept it so far.
I've actually got a text based Navbox that looks exactly the same by using CSS, but I still have to perfect the design before I'm willing to give up my nice anti-aliased image map.
