One of the other posters mentioned power and flexibility and i agree.
systems like Joomla are great but offer some limited flexibility. Also with Joomla you have to consider the cost of a good custom template.
templates for these systems can be very expensive to hire out ($200+++) or very complicated if you want to create your own (research and coding intensive).
You would also probably need to have an expert consultant you can talk to if you plan to make a big site...however some of the forums (like the Joomla forum) are very good.
But they can be work intensive and complicated....so you should make sure it is worth it and the best option for your particular project.
You may also consider that custom CMS systems can be created that are far far less complicated. You can hire a coder for stuff like this on popular sites like rentacoder.
some CMSs just have TOO MANY features and are more complicated than are what is needed.
