OK the question of the day - I added a free stat counter to a new website last year and today I am making a comparison. The free one lists 1677 visitors and the stat counter that came with the website lists 28,022. Does the free one just not count everybody, or does the not-free one inflate the numbers?

It could be that one is listing the unique visitors and the other one actual hits, which will include all things loaded from the site and therefore be a much higher number.

Yes that's the 28,000+ one - I just wanted to see what the difference in numbers would be.

Check your accounts raw logs
if your on cpanel click log manager/view.
