The (unstable) release of PHPBB3 has come out, and I downloaded it locally to try it out. I was wondering if anyone else had, and if so, what did you think of it?

I found it to be very similar to PHPBB of old, except for simply a different design (one which I do not like). Hopefully it is more secure, since that was the main issue, but I think one would be better off sticking with a version 2 product rather than the 3rd version (clearly at least until a stable version is released).

What do you all think?

I would use version 3. They are up to RC4 which is stable enough for me, and they provide upgrades to newer versions when released. There are several changes from 2 to 3 including the addition of the UCP (user control panel), and several other tools to combat spam, etc. I recommend that you install it in a test location and play around with it. It's sweet compared to version 2.

I have installed it for a few clients already including a friend of mine, and they all like it. It definitely rivals paid services such as IPB & vBulletin.

Also, prosilver is the default theme. If you don't like that one, there is another one that is installed called subsilver2 that you can use.

Yeah, I understand that, but I don't see any new features, to forums. It's all stuff you can find in forum software and that you could already get through mods and things like that. Obviously the convenience is there in that it's inherent and doesn't have to be hacked in, but it's not anything "new."

I understand how to switch styles; I'm just not in love with the 'default' one.

Anywho, it's all about personal preference. It seems now that forum software isn't even the way to go. Content management systems are better as articles and other informative postings are better for attracting visitors...

Yeah, I would go with phpBB3 if you are going for a forum service. In this release of phpBB the team focused mainly on security, since version 2 had lots of security holes and flaws. Also, they released it a while ago, probably around Christmas, if not earlier. There arent really that many 3 themes out there, but phpbbhacks.com is constantly updated and is getting new 3 themes almost every week: phpBB3 themes.
