We wish to add a forum to our HTML website. The forum software vendors recommends running PHP as a module. Our present web host runs PHP through the CGI bin and will only run PHP as a module if we buy their dedicated server plan. This is not appropriate because I do not have the extensive IT knowledge to be able to handle such a move.

The host I am looking to move our website to does run PHP as a module on a shared managed server.

My question is why will one host be happy to run PHP as a module and another refuses to do so?

Probably because the management have been badly informed by either a stupid, ill-informed or arrogant systems administrator Wink

Either that or it's simply a limitation of the off the shelf hosting solution that they use and they simply don't know how to do it the other way. You should be able to run php scripts from any location in your site - not just a cgi-bin (that way of doing things is sooooo 1998) Laughing out loud
