I have been making just private websites for fun (like on geocities) for a while and I have dreamweaver and photoshop. But i'm finally taking the plunge into a real web page.

My question is, how can I put in an area (such as on my home page) where I can update, post news, and things of that sort, but also have my visitors be able to post responses to my posts?

You're going to need a some type of script for that. Or you could make your own script. Check out hotscripts.com for one.

This is what's called a blog (more or less). You can do a google for what that means. There are a lot of variations but one form is, like you said, to post news and such with comments. I use a script called wordpress (http://www.wordpress.com). It's really easy to set up and there's really good customization and documentation. You could also check out blogger.com, moveable type... I forget what the others are called but there are lots of good ones out there.

Just to follow on from what Megan has said... Blogger.com is a good service with lots of options and it's very easy to use. Most bloggers start off at Blogger.

you can also try cutenews to update the site...it would have to be a host with PHP. Smiling

The "classics" are MovableType, Greymatter, NewsPro (which is something else now I think) and yeah, Blogger.

For more complex and if you're hosted with php, you can even get something like a forum software, and mod out certain sections so only you can post in them.
